Orland, Maine. The 4,500 acre Wildlands encompasses several small mountain peaks, numerous streams and frontage on the Dead River and Hothole Pond. A network of gravel roads provides vehicle access and is open to walking, running, biking, horseback riding and snowmobiling seasonally. A variety of trails, easy to strenuous, will guide you to special views and other places off the beaten path. Access is free.
In the Wildlife Protection Zone, wildlife habitat is the priority. People are welcome, but please walk your dog on one of the many other trails in the Wildlands.
There are 4 trailheads where you can park and enter the Wildlands. The North and South gates are open to cars Friday- Sunday from mid-June through October.4,700-acre area for wildlife habitat, recreation, education & sustainable forestry. Open to the public year-round for a variety of uses such as hiking, X-country skiing, snow-shoeing & snowmobiling.

There are trails throughout the island (the largest uninhabited island on the east coast of the US) and the beach area (5+ miles) all around the island is stunning with its various rock/ledge formations and sandy to pebbly type of beach. If you choose to walk the beach, it is recommended that you go during low tide.
