Winery, Restaurants and Cafes.

Perched on top of a hill at Gardeners Bay, with a view to the Hartz mountains to the south west, this gorgeous family run winery is run by Rob and Anthea. They are wonderful hosts and are more than happy to chat and show you around. If you are a Pinot fan then this is a must visit winery. They also specialise in premium fortified wines and liqueurs. You can check out their website here: https://hartzview.com.au/ There is small historical element to this location. The Pickers Huts are now heritage listed and make for a interesting visit.

The food is very good and comes highly recommended by previous guests. The restaurant in Judbury, nestled in an architect designed building has a spectacular view to hearby green pastures. Prices are around $29-$39 for a main course. Check out their website. https://www.homehillwines.com.au/

Located on the Huonville side of Cygnet this is a great place to visit and sample some of this locally produced beverage. We recommend their very tasty ciders. They grow and make it on site and have a wide range of flavours to choose from. Well worth a visit. We have not eaten at the Cafe attached so cannot recommend it at the moment.

Pick a sunny day and catch the ferry from Kettering for a brilliant day out. We recommend the Cheese company for not only their excellent cows milk cheese, but also they make great fresh bread and it all can be washed down with their yummy whey beer.

On Bruny Island, Get Shucked is just before the Cheese Factory as you travel towards south Bruny and serves fresh plump oysters. Select a delicious white wine to enjoy them with and then at low tide, walk along the sandy bay immediately opposite the venue. Our recommendation is to visit them around 11am when the guys have just delivered a fresh batch of oysters to the servery. Check out their website here. https://www.getshucked.com.au/

Catch the car ferry from Kettering and visit this beautiful Island close to our home. There are ferries every 30 minutes starting from 6.30am. The cost per car is $50 as at Christmas 2023. They have increased their prices in the last two years so, check on their website what the current prices are. Just a note, the boat drivers have a 1 hour lunch where services cease and then start again once lunch is over. Note the last return ferry is at 7.15 so if you miss it, prepare to stay over night. :-) Timetables and maps in the room.

Activities Near By

Within a short drive of our place.
A lovely little walk that is a short 5 min drive away from our home is Randalls Bay. Head back towards Cygnet and turn left off the main road to drop down to this hideaway beach. The beach is sheltered from most wind directions so is a gorgeous relaxing walk in southern Tasmania. For those who like to get the heart pumping, at the far end heading west, you can climb the stairs, walk along the bush track to another tiny secluded beach. The round trip along both beaches takes about 1 hour. This is a great beach to take the kids for a swim as for the most part, the wave action is small. Remember the water safety rules as this is not patrolled by life guards.

Kayak down to the mouth of the river and back. Take your fishing pole, sit back and relax the beautiful outdoors.

Pick a fine day in summer and drive to beautiful Cockle Creek. One would think you are in Queensland with white sands, crystal clear waters and gorgous animal habitats. Except the water will be cold. It takes about 2.5 hours to drive from our place. The road is mostly sealed except for the last quarter of the journey. Pack a lunch and bring your portable BBQ to make a hot cuppa. There are free camping spots to use which is popular with the locals. If you love fishing or diving for crays, this could be a winner.

Huonville is the closest larger township to our home. About 30 mins drive. This is where we do our weekly food shop - at Woolworths. There are many cafes to check out, a post office, petrol stations, mechanic, Clennetts Mitre 10, a reasonable golf course, a good sized landromat and much more.

Cygnet is approximately 15 minutes drive from our place. This is our local township to top up our food supplies. There are several cafes to enjoy a good coffee or tea, the Old Bank Cafe and the Red Velvet Lounge. There is a pub on the corner by the round-about, a fast food outlet beside the well stocked and friendly IGA, a Sunday monthly market, laundromat, news agency, petrol station, post office and more.

Get to know this 2.3-km loop trail near Randalls Bay. It takes an average of 29 min to complete and is generally considered easy however there is one steep section as you walk up the hill. This trail is great for hiking, running, and walking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime.
