Beaches to visit

The beaches in and around San Juan del Sur are spectacular and well worth visiting.
Leave your wetsuit at you home! Off shore breezes and warm waves is Nicaragua’s best natural resource if you ask the locals. Head to Playa Hermosa for surf lessons or a relaxing day at the beach. If you are lucky, you might even get to witness baby turtles released into the wild from the local hatchery on site. Catch a shuttle to Playa Hermosa directly from Villas de Palermo any day of the week by giving the front desk 24 hour notice. The daily beach shuttles depart from the hotel at 10am and return around 5pm. Hermosa beach has a bar and grill, showers, restroom facilities and hammocks so be sure to bring cash if you want to eat meals at the beach. Surf lessons and surfboard rentals can be made directly at the beach and paid for in cash directly to the surf instructor.

Catch the season right between August and September and you will see millions of turtles arrive to lay their eggs. Months later the baby turtles emerge from the sand to make their way to the ocean. A wonder of nature. Playa la Flor is also a great place to go for a hike.

Sightseeing

Get out and about in San Juan del Sur to experience the beauty that makes it such a special and unspoilt place.
A very popular hike people take here is up to the Jesus statue that towers over the San Juan del Sur bay. To access the steep road leading up to the statue you can either walk the beach and take the set of stairs at the far end or you can go through the neighborhood below, following the signs that read “Jesus de la Divina Misericordia”. If you do decide to go through the neighborhood, and you have a 4×4 vehicle, you do have the option of driving most of the way up the hill. There’s a flat dirt area where you can park and then just walk the arduous steps that lead to the top. There is a $C50 (less than $2 at this time) cost to go to the top, but the views are more than worth it!
