One of my favorites izakaya in Beppu. It is run by staff who used to work in Beppu's famous izakaya Ureshiya (closed permanently). Everything is delicious and homemade but my favorites are gyoza, potato salad and the boiled fish!

Great izakaya run by mother and son only, which gives it its homely atmosphere. They also offer lunch for only 500 yen! This has earned them respect from everyone which makes them super popular! You can call in advance to check if there are seats.

Hifumi is open 364 days a year (only closed on new year) and has been run for 50 years by the 80 year old couple! Legendary place. Open from 6pm until 3am. A lifesaver when everything else closes.

Go here for Beppu's iconic cold noodles (reimen) and chicken tempura (toriten)!
Onipan cafe is the only bakery around Beppu station that uses natural yeast. If you are picky about bread like we are, you should definitely pay a visit.

Genova is hands down Beppu's (Japan's??) best gelato shop. They use high quality ingredients and jersey milk to make over 100 varieties of gelato flavors. My recommendation is to buy a double (cone or cup) and enjoy mixing flavors! If you go for single, go for pistachio.

A short 15 minute trail that ends at the beautiful Otobaru waterfall! The entrance is just behind Rakutenchi amusement park.

Hike up Takasaki mountain from here! Enjoy a very peaceful 45 minute walk (the trail is called therapy road for a reason!) and you may encounter wild monkeys too! You will reach the former castle grounds on top of the mountain.
