Seat of the ancient High Kings of Ireland, On a clear day its claimed that you can see 10 counties in Ireland. In the distance from the top of the mounds to the northeast you can see the white quartz front of Newgrange and to the north the Hill of Slane. An important archeological site, thirty monuments are visible, and many more again which have no visible remains on the surface but which have been detected using special non-intrusive archaeological techniques and aerial photography. A huge temple measuring 170 metres and made of over 300 wooden posts, was discovered recently at Tara. Visitors center, coffee shop and a really cool second hand bookshop, really worth a visit.

Beautiful castle, definitely worth a visit. Stop in for tea and scones, or something more substantial. Keep an eye out for the resident castle dogs wandering around, you might have to step over a wolfhound to get into the castle :)
