Copper Stills Mountain Cabin Adventure Guide

Copper Stills Mountain Cabin Adventure Guide

Sightseeing

While pretty darn cool, these are all the things the internet will tell you to go to. We aren't knocking the internet, that's how you found us. With that being said, being Asheville locals and mountain dwellers, Matt and Jen can show all the same stuff without the crowds, hassle of waiting in line and scheduling. We offer hiking excursions (that isn't published online), rafting, float trips, Mountain biking, Archery/rifle/handgun shooting lessons and we supply all the gear you'll need for the activities.
If you can hike at least a 2 hour round trip at 4000' feet, Matt and Jen can show you the same thing without a crowd and much closer to the cabin. While it can get pretty busy here, its still worth going. Its right on the Appalachian Trail but you can drive there as well. The views are hard to beat. It does have a short but steep walk to the top, but once you are there, you get 360 degree mountain views from 5000' above sea level.

Before you pay the big bucks for this, just know Matt and Jen can take two of you down any type of water you are comfortable with with top quality gear and safety. 15 Minutes from Copper Still's Cabin is, in our humble opinion- the best river guide service on the Nolichucky and the French Broad Rivers. Ignore the address, their building is nearby -north of Marshall, NC.

Horse Creek is a wonderful spot to go for a picnic. This is an equally great spot for fishing and playing in the water.

Food scene, theatre, culture, and history

When you guys rent our whole cabin, it forces Jen and I to head back to the city so we know these places well.
Hot Springs has more than you might think. Roads are usually accessible year round with a full time populace. The town includes 3 bars/taverns, 4 restaurants, hardware store, and adventure gear and clothing store, auto repair shop, hot mineral springs, and a few good sights to see!

If you need the low down on the town, ask Matt and Jen how to avoid the tourists traps and get the best value. Be prepared for a 50 minute drive that is worth it for the scenery alone. 30 minutes away there are several cave tours worth going to! If you like real spelunking and exploring, just get Matt to take you on a trip himself.

Conseils sur la ville

Margaret Falls Trail-1362 Shelton Mission Rd, 4.3 miles away

Light and easy hike that is slightly uphill going in and the opposite going back. Anyone can do it, even with kids. The reward is an amazing waterfall that is rarely ever crowded, if you even see anyone else there at all.

Black Stack Cliffs, 5 miles up from Copper Stills Cabin

Secret local tip- Take a short drive in your car and avoid a long grueling uphill hike directly to the top of the trail. At the top of the road, you'll see the remains of the Viking Mountain Ski Lodge. Find the white dashed trees. Turn left. The 10 minute level hike lends itself to a left turn where you'll see a sign for Black Stack Cliffs. We often host campfires with wine and snacks nearby here if the wind is light.

Viking Mountain Fire-tower, Amazing Views

This decommissioned Fire-Tower is well hidden and hardly published online. Only guests who book with Copper Stills will be shown this hidden site.

Meadow Creek Fire Tower, 15 minutes from the Cabin

This is an awesome decommissioned fire tower on the western edge of the tall and steep Tennessee Appalachian Mountains that has been refurbished and opened to the public. Its views look west as far as the eye can see. Dress for a cool strong wind year round when coming here. Copy and Paste this into your phone's GPS app. 35.970928, -82.971361 It is perfect to pair this with a visit to the Bubbling Springs Shooting Range trip experience that you book with Matt and Jen.

Bubbling Springs Shooting Range, 15 minutes away

15 minute drive. Located right off of TN HWY 107 heading southwest towards Del-Rio, TN. A sort of hidden Forest Pistol and Rifle shooting range with target stands of 25, 50, 75, 100, 150 yard distances. Three decent condition shooting tables and it's rarely busy but coming across one or two other visitors can be common. Definitely stop by Meadowcreek Fire-Tower (also listed in this guide) if you're going to the range either by yourself or with your host.

How to dress for our mountain!

-For your outer layer, bring a light jacket with a hood that can shed rain and is capable of blocking wind. -Under that jacket, a zip up or pull over fleece or polyester/wool sweater makes for a great insulation layer you can peel on or off as the day warms and cools. -Moisture wicking undershirt and socks to wear under all that. -Light hiking shoes or boots waterproof up to the laces -Bring Pants, even in summer, it gets cool in the evenings. -Ball cap in the warmer months, a toboggan for the rest!

Rich Mountain Fire Tower, Best Views in the smokies

Avoid any crowds and enjoy a serene 360 degree view from a former Fire-Tower lookout structure that is renovated and open to the public. Problem is, few people know about it. It's not really online and I can't give you an address. However, we can take you there, and there is no cost at all. If its August and you want to be so high up that it's 70 degrees, or see snow in the winter when nearby areas, have none, let Matt and Jen know!
