Less than 10 minutes away, Fort Knox is one of the best-preserved military fortifications on the New England seacoast. It has a great history behind it, and there are several public events hosted there every year. If you are visiting in October, Fright at the Fort is an annual favorite - think Haunted House meets historic fort......spooky to say the least.

A local paranormal favorite, Colonel Jonathan Buck was the founder of Bucksport (known as Buckstown during his life). In 1902, a story appeared in the New England Magazine that really popularized the story. A section of it reads, “All was ready and the hangman about to perform his grewsome [sic] duty, when the woman turned to Colonel Buck and raising one hand to heaven, as if to direct her last words on earth, pronounced this astounding prophecy: ‘Jonathan Buck, listen to these words, the last my tongue shall utter. It is the spirit of the only true and living God which bids me speak them to you. You will soon die. Over your grave, they will erect a stone, that all may know where the bones of the mighty Jonathan Buck are crumbling to dust. But listen! Listen all ye people — tell it to your children and your children’s children — upon that stone will appear the imprint of my foot, and for all time long, long after your accursed race has perished from the earth, the people will come far and near and the unborn generations will say, There lies the man who murdered a woman. Remember well, Jonathan Buck, remember well!’” Colonel Buck died in 1795 and in 1852 his grandchildren erected a grand monument near his grave site. Shortly after the monument was installed, a strange image (or stain) appeared on the grave. It seems to depict, albeit crudely, a woman’s leg and foot. When the stain could not be removed from cleaning, it was replaced. Shortly after being replaced, it seems the leg and foot stain appeared on the new stone monument and can be viewed today.

Whether you're a history buff or you like small coastal towns, Castine is a great place to visit. Located about 30 minutes from my location, its makes for a great day-trip. Castine is one of the most historic towns in Maine, having not only been founded around 1670. In addition, Castine had been highly contested, having been a major installation and trading post in the early history for the Dutch, English, French and United States. Several old forts, a lighthouse and museums are available in town to explore. In addition, Castine is the home of Maine Maritime Academy, a four-year university where many of the graduates receive US Coast Guard Licenses to become professional Maritime officers and engineers. If you are visiting while the Academy's training vessel, the T/S State of Maine is in port, tours are many time available.

Déplacements

Have your own vehicle if possible

Bucksport is like many New England small towns where there is a town center or downtown, but other than that, they are spread out with little to no public transportation. The same holds true for Bucksport. While generally you will be able to find taxi service that can get you back and forth to the airport or other transportation hub, to be able to get the most our of your trip and to be able to see the most, a vehicle is recommended.
