Neighbourhoods

Pyrenees-Orientales - Languedoc-Roussillon Pins Beach in Argelès-sur-Mer is located across from the Bois de Pins across from the casino. This beach is near downtown and is handicap accessible, and there is a lifeguard here, surrounded by water sports bars, restaurants and a beautiful port at the foot of the mountains. Racou Beach in Argelès-sur-Mer marks the limit with the large beaches of Languedoc-Roussillon and the little creeks of the Cote Vermeille. This beach is less frequented than those of downtown, with its little houses nestled directly on the beach, plenty of restaurants and bars close by. Porteil Creek in Argelès-sur-Mer is located to the south of this seaside destination, near Collioure. It is the most beautiful creek in Argelès-sur-Mer and the largest at 180 meters. Nestling at the base of the Albères Massif, the famous seaside resort of Argelès-sur-Mer combines all the necessary ingredients for a great holiday, whether you're enjoying sports or relaxing. The 7 km vast sandy beach, the 12 hectares of pine forest by the sea, and the 3 km tree-lined esplanade make it a most enjoyable place to stay. There are numerous leisure activities which can be enjoyed here on land and sea. Argelès-sur-Mer also has its old town area with typical side streets, a marina with boutiques and restaurants, and a traditional market rich in local produce. Each July there is a three-day contemporary music festival, the Déferlantes d'Argelès-sur-Mer, featuring famous artists.

Originally Palatium Rodegarium, the name was changed to Palau de Vidre, ‘palace of glass’, in 1442, when glassmakers from around France settled in the area. Attracted by plentiful resources such as sand from the River Tech, wood to sustain the high temperatures required for glass blowing, and the proximity of the Elne Market, the industry flourished. About 20 years ago, the festival was set up to celebrate the rich glass heritage and glass makers from around the world gathered together, making the festival an immediate success. Don’t miss the four days of music, castellers, Batacuda and street entertainment, with glass making and blowing on every corne
