Mayfield Garden is about 15 minutes from Oberon and an hour from our property. It is Australia’s largest privately-owned garden and is the legacy of the Hawkins family who took their inspiration from the best gardens in Europe. It is a spectacular garden that has so many different sections. If you are time poor, a visit to their cafe is worth it.

Situated in the heart of Bathurst, the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum features some of the finest and rarest specimens of mineral crystals and fossils from around the world. The collection is housed in the historic 1876 Public School building which underwent major refurbishment before being fitted out with stunningly beautiful exhibitions. As a unique education resource, the building currently holds 2000 fossil and mineral specimens which are displayed in two main exhibitions - the Fossil Gallery and the Mineral Gallery. The Mineral Gallery includes specimens from many of Australia’s and the world’s most important mines, brilliantly displayed and clearly identified. Displays explore the formation of rocks and minerals, mineral locations, crystal structure and the use of minerals in our lives. Rare formations, crystallised gold, raw gemstones, delicate uranium mineral crystallisation and stunning colours make this gallery unforgettable. The fossil gallery displays specimens from every major stage of life on Earth. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a display of three dinosaurs, a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, an Albertosaurus and a smaller Thescelosaurus skeleton. The collection also includes Australia's largest collection of fossils in amber, fossilised dinosaur eggs, some of the oldest fossils of early forms of life, and a large collection of Australia's unique opalised fossils. The museum also has a temporary exhibition space displaying a changing program of travelling and temporary exhibitions and a museum shop with a wide variety of quality fossil and mineral specimens, dinosaur, Earth history and science products.

Carcoar is about half-way between Triangle Flat and Orange and is cute historic town. Film makers love this town as the town has kept its authenticity of the 1800's. It is the third oldest settlement west of the Blue Mountains. Carcoar is a Gundungurra word meaning either frog or kookaburra.

Rockley is a tiny historic town located 10-15 minutes from Triangle Flat. It was first opened as a township in 1848 after a copper mine was opened 8 km from the town and gold was also uncovered. The pub is open for meals (mainly on the weekend). I would check their Facebook page for opening times. The Rockley Mill and Stables Museum was built in 1862 and displays the rich history of the area, with old mill machinery, period clothing on display, old police records and more. It is well worth a visit, but is only open on weekends. Let us know in advance if you would like to visit during another time and we might be able to sort something out.
