It is a natural reserve located in the Setúbal peninsula, with the highest altitude in Pico do Formosinho, with an altitude of 501 meters. The fauna and flora is quite diverse, with about 1,400 plant species concentrated in this territory, which correspond to 40% of the Portuguese flora and less than 1% of the country's plant area. The rare orchids and wild tulips stand out. It is also the "home" of a very special plant called Euphorbia pedroi (espovel-do-espichel). Among the animals, mammals stand out: the fox (Vulpes vulpes), wild boar (Sus scrofa), the weasel (Mustela nivalis), the toirão (Mustela putorius), the genet (Genetta genetta), wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) , the badger (Meles meles) and the probable occurrence of wildcat (Felis silvestris). The caves, mainly in the cliffs, have a very particular fauna of bats associated with them: teddy bat (Miniopterus schreibersii), Mediterranean horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus euryale), large horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) and bat moorish horseshoe (Rhinolophus meherlyi). Among the birds, the Bonelli's eagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus) stands out - with the only couple to nest on the Portuguese coast, the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), the owl of the towers ( Tyto alba), the swift (Apus melba), the blue blackbird (Monticola solitarius) and the blackthorn (Phoenicurus ochrurus), the nightingale (Luscinia mergarhynchos), the robin and the wren ( Troglodytes troglodytes), the beak (Coccothraustes coccothraustes), the hoopoe (Upupa epops), the common partridge, the sparrow lark (Galerida cristata), the red-necked nighthawk (Caprimulgus ruficollis) and kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), the great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopus major), the titmills (Parus spp.), and the song cuckoo (Cuculus canorus). In amphibians and reptiles, the gecko, the pentadactyl legged snake (Chalcides bedriagai), the ladder snake (Elaphe scalaris), the rat snake (Malpolon monspessulanus), the horned viper and the horseshoe snake (Coluber hippocrepis). Aquatic resources provide shelter for turtles (Mauremys leprosa) and water snakes (Natrix spp.). Among the invertebrates the cave spider of the Frade (Anapistula ataecina) stands out.
