Here are some of our favourite restaurants & cafés ......😋🍻🥂🍴🥗🍲👨‍🍳👩‍🍳
This is our favourite little restaurant, it’s located in Corao which is very close to us , about a 10/15 minute drive. There is a great menu of the day for 14 Euros. Really nice staff & super clean. Delicious food. Remember to try the Tarta de Abuela dessert.

This is a seriously addictive restaurant!! A really quick drive too from the cottage. The menu is only €12 and the food is really good. Really big portions so good if you’re hungry after a long hike in the Picos, if you can’t eat it all they will wrap it up & let you take it away for later! Easy parking too and friendly service. Easy to find as on main road. Eat indoors or outside on the terrace. Very clean and airy. A favourite with the locals, not many tourists.

The Roman bridge in Cangas de Onis is one of the most important monuments in Asturias. The Victoria Cross hangs below the bridge, it symbolises Pelayo's victory over Arab forces, thus starting the Spanish reconquest. Access is free, and you have magnificent views of the river. A must visit if you come to Asturias.

Definitely worth a visit to this Sunday morning market in Cangas de Onís. Situated by the church. Main attractions are the seasonal nuts; hazelnuts and walnuts, jars of really good quality anchovies, white Asturian dried beans and the cheeses. The most well known Asturian cheese Cabrales is here, but it’s also worth trying some of the less well know cheeses like El Perel, Gamoneu, La Chivita, Lazana and Vidiago ahumado which are all fantastic and you won’t find outside Asturias. There of lots of different producers of the same cheese, so it’s worth trying samples first to see the difference. There’s also homemade cakes, pastries, bread, butter and homemade tinctures and toiletries as well, get here early as by midday the place is heaving and some things will have sold out.

Try not to visit this place in the summer as quite busy and you can only go up on a bus (unless you drive up before 8:15am). My favourite time to visit is in the spring when it’s really quiet, and you can see snow on the mountains. It’s really breathtaking and seriously worth the drive up. You could walk for hours & hours exploring once there. Make sure you choose a sunny clear day, otherwise the views won’t be very good & can make driving & walking dangerous. Bring a picnic!

In the foothills of the Picos de Europa National Park sit thousands of limestone caves known as the Caves of Cheese. The caves provide the exact temperatures and humidity needed to store and age cheese. Tourists can visit these caves with the dairy farmers who work there to see and even taste some of the cheeses being stored.

This is the Dobra lagoon. Because it's so beautiful, naturally in the Summer it gets busy. In the Summer best to visit on a weekday at 6pm or later and there shouldn’t be too many visitors around. Esta es la laguna Dobra. Debido a que es tan hermoso, naturalmente en verano se llena. En verano, es mejor visitar en un día laborable a las 6 p.m. o más tarde y no debería haber demasiados visitantes.

There’s always a quiet spot to be found along the river Sella, either for a picnic or a swim to cool off in the summer. If you want a quiet walk along the river without any other people, you won't find a soul along this path. If you look at the photo of google maps it starts here and it goes from Aballe hydroelectric station to the Dobra bridge on the other side of the Sella, the opposite side to the road. If you like sport then head to Ariandos where there are lots of activity centres hiring out canoes to go on the Sella river.

Quite a rare sight and spectacular to see. These water jets (geysers) are formed by the big waves hitting the caves & then pushing the water out of the cracks above. Very impressive, including the sound. The main car park is a good 15-20 minute walk from the cliffs. You will pass an amazing little beach area in an incredibly beautiful inlet called Playa de Guadamia. Bring bathing costumes and towels with you so that you can take a dip. The cliffs are beautiful but watch out for young kids as there are some big holes in the ground that are easy to see but are not at all cordoned off. If you do visit when there is no spray, just chill out and appreciate the view and the sounds! Download an app like 'My Tide Times' onto your phone to see the times for high and low tide. You'll want to arrive here for high tide. If you have the option, wait for high tide AND a rougher sea, otherwise you will hear the waves through the holes in the cliff but you won't see the spray.

Local Towns & Villages. Cities too!

There are so many wonderful places to visit, here are some we recommend.....
If you are a serious cheese lover, then this place is for you. It’s a beautiful little family run business in a hamlet called Cebia (where I live), which is just a bit further up from Labra. The cheese farm is called ‘Quersería La Casina de Cebia’ and the cheese here is really tasty. The cheese is called ‘Queso Gamoneu Del Valle’. They make it completely naturally and with lots of love. It’s a blue cheese variety, not too strong, just a hint of blue. You can buy it here in their shop. Definitely worth a visit, also for the beautiful drive there and the gorgeous view at the top. There is a lovely walk through the farm and around the mountain if you are feeling active!

Cangas de Onis makes a good base for exploring the Picos de Europa. It claims to be the "first capital of Christian Spain" and is where Pelayo, a Visigoth noble set up his court in the 8th century. The main sight at Cangas de Onis is its 'Roman' bridge which has the Picos de Europa as a splendid backdrop. It appears in much of the promotional litterature of the area and whilst it is very attractive it has been rebuilt on numerous occasions. The bridge has five arches with the central arch much larger than the others and a copy of the Victoria Cross hangs from the middle. It was declared a Historic Artistic site in 1931. It is very pleasant to take a walk along the edge of the river especially on a hot day. There is also a 15th century chapel, the Capilla de Santa Cruz which is built on a Celtic Bronze Age dolmen. The town hall, the Renaissance-style Cortes palace and the 16th century Chapel of San Antonio are the other main sites in Cangas de Onis. These aside the town makes a pleasant base and has some reasonably priced hotels and restaurants. The main square is a good place to sit and enjoy a drink or a meal and it has a pleasant atmosphere. It is also home to one of Spain's splendid Paradors. The Parador Cangas de Onis is in a former 12th century monastery. Set in a loop of the river Sella the monastery has wonderful views over the Picos de Europa mountains. Every Sunday there is a fantastic & extremely popular market in the town square and down some of the streets. Well worth a visit to buy some local produce.

A bit of a drive, an hour, 35 min drive from Cangas, but it’s worth it. Potes is one of the most attractive villages in Cantabria, in the north of Spain. The village is in the centre of the historic Liébana region, an area that is surrounded by spectacular mountains, with running streams and rivers. Its old quarter has the Property of Cultural Interest designation. It streets have many bridges, as well as buildings and monuments with centuries of history. Potes was originally the dominion of the Infante Tello (14th century), son of King Alfonso XI of Castile, and in 1445 became the property of the Marquis of Santillana and his descendants, the dukes of El Infantado. Specifically, the tower known as the Torre del Infantado, a sturdy construction dating from the 15th century –and until recently the site of the Town Hall– is one of the most important monuments in the town today. Other buildings and sites of interest in the capital of the historic region of Liébana include various stately homes and ancestral mansions such as the house-tower of Orejón de la Lama (Baroque), the San Vicente Parish Church, with architectural elements dating from the 14th to the 18th century, and the ancient bridges of San Cayetano and La Cárcel spanning the Quiviesa riverbed.

Beautiful Beaches

There are so many amazing beaches, here are a few we recommend.....🏖
Playa de Poo (pronounced Po!) is a fantastic child friendly beach. It’s a very sheltered cove that makes it ideal for families. Little ones can play to their hearts content as you don’t have to worry about the sometimes tempestuous nature of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s spotless and a very tranquil place indeed. Always a chuckle about the name too.... ;-)

This is a fantastic little shop which sells groceries and also typical Asturianos products. It’s also the best & cheapest place to get large takeaway baguettes (bocadillos) to take with you when you go for a trek in the Picos. ‘Queso y Serrano’ is always a winner!
