Hiking in Glacier

Logan Pass

One of Glacier’s most popular trails, this trek will take you along the Garden Wall, the distinctly jagged looking peaks visible from the Going-to-the-Sun Road. After the first quarter mile, the trail becomes precarious as it is along a sheer cliff edge, however handrails are built in. Other than the height, the trail is rated as easy. Look into through hiking to a car or shuttle at the Loop or adding on to an out and back trip with the Grinnell Glacier Overlook spur trail. During the high season parking here is extremely limited, consider taking the shuttle from the Apgar or St. Mary Visitor Centers.

West Side

This trail is heavily used, but for good reason. The payoff for this easy 2.5 mile trail is a gorgeous alpine lake framed by the sharp mountain peaks Glacier is famous for. If time allows, explore the Trail of the Cedars area preceding the trail head. During the high season parking here is extremely limited, consider taking the shuttle from the Apgar Visitor Center.

This 4.3 mile moderate trail leads to arguably the most picturesque lake in all of Glacier. Another popular choice among visitors, parking can be difficult but not as bad as Logan Pass or Avalanche Lake. The trail begins at Swiftcurrent Pass trailhead. Allow 5-6 hours, plus more if you’d like to go for a dip in this glacial lake.

From the Swiftcurrent picnic area, hike 3.5 miles to Grinnell Lake or take a right at the well-marked fork up the mountain to Grinnell Glacier for a total of 5.5 miles one way. One of the few actual remaining glaciers, Grinnell becomes a spectacular waterfall as it melts and creates the bright blue color of the lake. A great full day option, or buy a ticket for the boat from the boat landing near Many Glacier Lodge to shave off the first 2.5 miles.

North Fork

Located 25 miles North of Apgar Visitor Center, Polebridge is a small Western town acting as the gateway to the North Fork area of Glacier National Park. It’s a quirky place, and worth a stop in at the mercantile for a huckleberry bear claw. Continue East down the only road into Polebridge and you will encounter a national park entry station. Clear signage will direct you to Bowman Lake, better known as Alison’s favorite place ever. Enjoy the peaceful, placid lake and take a walk down the 7.0 miles of shoreline trail.
