Food scene

An old biker bar turned gastro pub. probably serving smoked deer stuffed inside a cow stomach dropped over sauerkraut and mashed potatoes...if you're into it that this may be your spot...seriously though their menu is ridiculous awesome and will challenge your idea of the normal, unless you were living in 19th century England.

Owned by Nancy, who has been in the neighborhood for well over a decade or more, Benna's is a far superior alternative to Dunkin'...great coffee, light snacks, bagels, soup, and a little window into the local art scene. It's a block from the most awesome house in which you're staying.

If you and your partner want to go out for a really nice dinner and drop some bucks, this is one of the places to go. Don't bring your bratty kids or your 20 something brother-in-law who smokes too much weed and won't get a job. You could bring your parents though, and let them know how grateful you are for putting up with your crap over the years.

So my bro, Riley, and I rolled in this place last summer just ripped up from the night before...it was 204 degrees Fahrenheit outside, and we sat down in the 103 degree restaurant and had one of the most amazing egg hoagies ever...nothing wrong with some dudes at the breakfast bar, chatting away with their buttcracks hanging out. I have a photo of that in my phone somewhere...so then we strolled out into the increasingly oppressive heat realizing that we may have had the most amazing breakfast experience in the world...I mean it's not eating Dim-Sum for breakfast while watching wind sweep across the South China Sea and a sampan going over the horizon revealing the curvature of the Earth, but it's dang close.

Left over from the French colonization of Indo-China, this Laotian bakery brought back probably the only thing of value from decades of brutal French exploitation. You can bitch and complain about colonization all you want, and with good reason, but there are gems that fall out of the darkest of human tragedies and misconduct, and that gem landed right here at 1218 MIfflin Street. F*&k yeah, this place is amazing with some of the best baked goods to come from the Far East and puts Dunkin and their first world crap to shame.

I’ve never been to this place but was at the owners old spot on 11th. These guys are over the top. There is always a line around the corner. And it’s a block away. Check their hours though...they aren’t open all that much.

One of the many Vietnamese places round these parts...I mean I don't get super excited about getting food here, but it always seems to work out. Pho is Pho and regardless of where I get the Pho (unless I'm in Chinatown) it all more or less seems the same to me. Pho at 6 and Washington is pretty much the same.

If you want some Banh Mi, here we go. Banh Mi or Vietnamese Hoagies are just unbelievable...get some French baguette, throw on some greens, shredded carrot and some marinated meat whatever and toss some low grade jalapeno on it to burn the face off the weak spirited...Cafe Diem banged up on 8 street with their banged up sign. Bing Bing is over the top. These guys just know how to do it and know how to do it well. The group has a few restaurants around, Cheu up on 11th in the Gayborhood and I heard another in Fishtown maybe, and another on top of the Sears Tower in Chicago and another establishment in Kuala Lampur ( it's probably all rumors) but they have a great sidewalk set up, and they won't let you down. If you have kids, they're (completely kidding about the grammar. I know the difference between they're and their) their happy hour cannot be beaten. Neighborhood Bar

Also known as the P.O.P.E. it's a good neighborhood bar with some sidewalk seating and a nice wide open window spot in the back room to people watch. I like hanging out there, chatting with my buddies and commenting on the people walking by...usually poking fun in a polite way, and as always someone walks by that I know, and we chat. They have ok bar food...I always wished they would step up their game a bit, but it works.

I love their outdoor seating stools...they seem to have struggled keeping kitchen staff, and their menu often changes. Only serving domestic beer and liquor, lately the sidewalk scene has been hijacked by a group of early 30s something parents with one kid who think being a parent is the hardest job in the world...I have five kids, and I think having one kid only barely qualifies you as a parent. But if you want to park your stroller and bring your dog that is a residual from when you were single, it's a good spot to meet other parents.

Owned by, dang it I can't remember his name right now , who is generally a chill dude often seen bartending, Lucky 13 is a local neighborhood bar that is just a chill scene. I like this place. I have had better bar food here than most places...they have a large section for sit down meals, solid beer selection, some TVs or whatever and sidewalk seating where you may feel a little exposed because there is around 100 yards of open space where Passyunk, Reed and 11th Street come together. That's a lot of space for this neighborhood, and it probably freaks out the residents a little bit. They have decent vegan junk food if you're a hippie.

Straight up neighborhood bar. I love this place and hang here often. I've taken some of my kids here and fed them a burger and fries while chatting with my bros. This isn't the oldest bar around, but there is nothing ever negative said about it. It can get crowded at times and other times it's just you and a few patrons enjoying the whatever-crafted beer they have written on the chalkboard.

This is outside of the neighborhood over in Newbold...it is a long walk, but I've always loved this place. Check out their menu online as it is always unique. Definite neighborhood bar and a little more edgier than East Passyunk as it is nestled up next to the growing younger hipster bloom in Point Breeze and Girard Estates. And yes, pre-Covid I would march in this jawn with all five of my kids and sit them down for fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and this ridiculous brownie that weighs 63 pounds and watch those little terrors rip it apart like sharks in a pool of chum. The servers were like "oh great, it's the wild Irish Indians again." Yeah I bet they love us though.

Earlier this year in the summer, my boys and I walked to the middle of the Ben Franklin Bridge. Déplacements

Look out for the "South Philly Slide"

Be very careful walking into crosswalks, especially with small children. People driving through this neighborhood, both foreign (and I mean from NJ) and domestic feel that stop signs possess a certain type of looser translation than other parts of the country. When hanging on the corner with my bros putting down 40s never a day goes by when I don't witness five or six near death experiences. I mean I'm not out there every day pulling 40s...
Coutumes et culture

Nothing good happens after 2 A.M.

Staggering home from a late night bar crawl may not be the best idea at 0230, but chances are you've probably made a series of bad decisions throughout the night anyway...let's not cross our t's and dot our i's on this one and get a cabUberLyft home instead....your mom and dad would be very happy that at least there was a modicum of prevailing common sense, and you may be very happy that you're not a crime victim trying to drunkenly explain what happened to officers at South Detectives, located at 24th and Wolf...which is a an even longer walk home at 5 am.
