Sightseeing

This is a must as it is spectacular! You can practically explore every aspect of the Minster. You can watch the stonemasons create new stonework on site or you can walk the roofs to get a panoramic view of the city or venture into the Minster crypt to explore the fascinating history. It is Yorks gem.

Jorvik visitor centre stands on the actual site of a 1000 year old viking settlement. It is a bit pongy in places as the historians wanted to recreate the full effect of Viking life but it is fascinating and an unique experience

The ghost tours of York are great fun. Apparently it is one of the most haunted cities in Britain and with 1000 years of history so a fair amount of ghosts to choose from.

Word has it that Harry Potters Diagon Alley was based on the Shambles. It is worth the visit to see HPs influence on the atmospheric boutique shops it holds

York’s City Walls are FREE. They are open to walk on from about 8.00am to dusk daily (except when wintry conditions make them too dangerous) You can book guided tours or explore at your own leisure. More information can be found at York Tourist Information Centre on 1 Museum Street, York.

How many public parks have an Abbey, A Medieval Hospitium and a Museum within them?! The Museum Gardens are lovely to walk through either as a shortcut to the city or just to meander through. The Star Inn (mentioned in the food section) is also situated within the Gardens so you can pop in for a drink or bite to eat whilst watching the life of the River Ouse stretch by. A very tranquil place.

Bishopthorpe Road is known locally for it's community vibe, with an array of independent food shops and cafes. It's a good place to visit if you want to see Yorks local side instead of the better known touristy areas.

This is my fave foodie street! 'Hairy Fig' delicatessen and cafe not only has the best name but also serves the best lunches in its tiny cafe. Hunt out the chocolates in the shop and the local produce in the deli. 'Spring Espresso' along the street serves the best quality coffee and the 'Fossgate Social' is a quirky and cosy haven for tired shoppers.

You are practically in Bootham! It's round the corner from Burton Stone Lane. It is a beautiful area of York and is part of your walk to the city centre. The Georgian buildings flank both sides of the street and there are a variety of eateries including artisan bakeries, cafes, pubs and beautiful independent shops and galleries to take in as you walk towards the centre of York.

A gorgeous restaurant on the river. If it is just a drink you want, you can enjoy it on the terrace overlooking the river Ouse.

This is a secret worth knowing! THE best pub in the city. small and perfectly formed. Great staff, superb home made pizzas and wonderful beers. I'd also recommend York Gin which is made within the city walls.

a historic gem tucked away behind the city walls. A beautiful place to have a warming winters drink by the log fire or a refreshing summers drink in the walled garden. A bit pricey but worth it.

‘Skosh’ comes from the Japanese word ‘sukoshi’ meaning small amount, a reference to the small plates for which the restaurant is known. In my opinion this is by far the best restaurant in York and don't be fooled by the simple surroundings. The food and service is outstanding. Very creative and exciting eating but make sure you book in advance as this restaurant is very popular.

If you are celebrating a very special occasion or you've just received a huge bonus at work! I'd recommend Roots. It now holds one Michelin Star and is run by chef Tommy Banks. Situated alongside the River Ouse and within a short walking-distance from York train station. The food is seasonal and fantastically creative.

Conseils sur la ville

Voyage avec des enfants

York can get very rowdy on Saturday evenings

There are a lot of hen and stag parties who congregate in the centre (Near Bettys Tea Room and Coney Street). This usually happens around 11pm. They are harmless but usually quite drunk and if you have small children they are best avoided!
