A short but breath taking hike through a canyon filled with ferns. The road to the parking lot is gravel and you have to drive through a shallow creek. Be sure to bring extra shoes or wear shoes you don't mind getting wet. There's a high chance you will have to cross the creek during the hike.

A beautiful beach nestled next to Trinidad Head (a great hike) and the bluffs of Trinidad State Park. Walk north up the beach to see the natural arch in the rocks.

The Arcata Marsh is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. The Marsh is used for birding, walks, runners and nature lovers. I recommend that you begin by parking at the parking lot located on South G Street Arcata and start your tour with a stop at the Marsh interpretive center. The center gives a history of the marsh, information on what you may see, and they even have a binocular borrowing program (leave an id and borrow a pair) if you would like to go birding.

Food scene

A locally owned and operated brewery. They feature a variety of beers made on site as well as a full bar for the non beer drinkers. The good is great and they even offer gluten free options. The Tuesday fried chicken special is a favorite (order it by phone early), along with the wings and pizza. They are closed Sunday & Monday.

This is my favorite sushi restaurant in the area. Everything I have had has been great. They offer dine in and takeout. I recommend calling early in the day to place your order for takeout, as they can be slow. They dont take reservations. For gluten free they do have a few rolls available and offer gluten free tempura (there is cross contamination).

If you are a steak lover, then this is your place. They feature locally sourced produce and meat cooked over a live fire. Their cocktails are also excellent. This is a favorite date night spot.

Ashely's Seafood located behind Papa Wheelies is a great place to get local, in season seafood, which you can bring home to cook. During crab season (dates vary, but winter) you can call ahead and place an order.

City/town information

A very small, and cute coastal town. They have a few resturants that offer classic American and seafood, as well as a grocery store. There are a few small art galleries that feature local art. Humboldt State University has an annex here, that is open to the public (donation box by front door). You can walk through the building and see salt water tanks with local plants and fish and out the back door is a touch tank for the kids. Trinidad also has many hikes and beach walks in the area.

Activity

The Hammond Trail is a favorite for walks, biking, and runs. The trail can be accessed at multiple points in Mckinleyville. The easiest being to park at Hiller Park. The trail starts just north of the playground. The first section is paved. If you want a longer hike you can continue onto the unpaved section, all the way to Clam beach.

Bigfoot Rafting is a good 2 hour drive away, but you will have memories of a life time after floating down the Trinity River. They offer both guided tours as well as equipment rental for your own adventures. If you would like more tips or have questions our family goes at least once a year on class 1-3 runs, and I would be happy to share any insight.
