Highlights of Sorrento

Tasso Square is dedicated to the italian poet Torquato Tasso who was born in Sorrento. In one corner of the square, there is the statue dedicated to this famous character who was best known for his poem "Gerusalemme Liberata" written in 1581. In the middle of the square, instead, you can admire the statue of Sorrento's patron saint: "Saint Antonino", celebrated on February the 14th. Tasso Square is not a historic square, it dates back only about a century. It has been built above a valley which was home of numerous mills.

This Valley was originally created by the violent eruption of the "Campi Flegrei" that devastated all the Mediterranean 37 thousand yearso ago. The name of this valley derives from the existence of a numerous mills used for grinding the wheat. The creation of Tasso Square in 1866, determined the isolation of the mill area from the sea causing an increase of humidity which made the area unbereable and was abandoned.
