Castle Mound is a long, narrow, weathering butte rising 180 feet above the surrounding sand plain and composed of Cambrian sandstone about 400 million years old. A variety of exposures and microclimates has resulted in contrasting forest communities on opposite sides of the mound. Exposed and shaded cliffs up to 30 feet high occur along the central backbone ridge, and sandstone boulders litter the sloping forest floor. The protected northeast slope is forested with a mixed pine forest of white and red pines with Hill's oak, white oak, paper birch, red maple, and large-toothed aspen. Groundlayer species typical of the northern forest--pipsissewa, large-leaved aster, partridge berry, and wintergreen--grow here. The dry southwest face is wooded with jack pine and oak. Bird species usually found further north--red-breasted nuthatch, solitary vireo, black-throated green warbler, and pine warbler--have been seen here. A hiking trail traverses the area and there is an observation tower near the center of the mound. Castle Mound Pine Forest is owned by the DNR and was designated a state natural area in November 1952.

Melrose is a small town of 500 so you won't find a local Uber, bus, or ride. Although you can still use the Uber app it will just be more pricey then normal because of the distance.
If you bring your own Kayaks or canoes You can text Jaden Sacia our 19 year old son for an additional fee of $40.00 for a drop off and pick up ride for kayaking or canoeing down the river. He will haul them back and forth so you don't have to do the hefty lifting. Text him at 715-299-5851 for availability.

Be sure to ask about where you can visit the local Amish communities. It's a unique experience if you haven't ever seen their way of lifestyle. You will find yourself feeling a lot more grateful and thankful for the basic things we call necessities.

No spring or summer country get away is complete with out a back yard fire and smores. Our house offers some of the best star gazing opportunities in the area.
Or if you've never tried a pudgy pie be sure to bring a can of pie filling, a stick of butter, and a loaf of bread. You'll find a recipe and pie maker located on site for your use.

This neck of the woods is full of BIG Whitetail deer. Be on the look out for deer and spotting the Melrose Monster. He's our towns legendary BIG BUCK. You'll be the towns new hero if you spot him. It's been known to bring good luck for anyone who gets the rare chance to see him. TRUST ME, You'll know if you see him. He is Monstrously huge.
