Open daily 6am to 6pm. Built in 1846 to replace the church that was destroyed by the Great Hurricane of 1831, this classic Gothic church is solid and soaring. The church grounds are serene and the cliff-edge site commands a sweeping view of the picturesque east coast. A noteworthy statue and funerary plaques add to the interest, and a small guidebook gives you details. In the churchyard rests Ferdinando Paleologus, a descendant of Emperor Constantine the Great, whose family was driven from the throne in Constantinople by the Turks. Ferdinando died here in 1678, after being a resident for over 20 years. Though always English, Barbados has attracted multinationals for quite some time.

Bath is the safest and one of the most popular beaches on the east coast of the island. Unlike several other bays on this coast, there are rarely strong currents at Bath. This is the perfect place for a refreshing sea bath followed by lunch on the picnic benches under the shade of casuarina trees. A stroll to the north reveals a small waterfall and streams and the remains of the old train line that once ran from Bridgetown to Belleplaine. The facilities at Bath include a large car park, picnicking areas, a small snackette, and changing/washrooms.

Chalky Mount is a rugged picturesque range of hills in the Scotland District of, Barbados, forming a jagged profile against the horizon when viewed from the east coast - commonly called Napoleon's Head. A 550 feet hill made of clay, Chalky mount is famous for the amount of potters that are located there. Mount Hillaby, and with it the Scotland District of Barbados, is the summit of an elongated submarine mountain range that is several hundreds km long extending from Trinidad to about Puerto Rico. The Scotland District is the only location in the entire Caribbean where this mountain range is above water. The highest elevation of Barbados is Mount Hillaby in the Scotland District, 340 m above sea level. The Scotland district contains rocks about 30 to 50 million years old, namely clay stones, sand- and siltstones, volcanic ash layers, chalk, and radiolarite (chert or flint, when hardened), as well as some odd rock formations such as mineral concretions that resemble huge canon balls. Most of these rocks are folded and faulted in a complex way. Oil has formed from some of the rock layers, and the so-called Scotland Sandstone hosts several oil fields at depths of about 1,000 to 2,000 m. Oil even reaches the surface in a few natural oil seeps in the Scotland District. In some locations the oil is oxidized and solidified to tar-like substance called ‘manjak’.

Caution: Swimming at Bathsheba

Swimming at Bathsheba is Dangerous. If you are not with someone who knows the area well do not swim here. There are dangerous rip tides and undertows. While it is tempting to walk into the ocean over the flat coral reefs, be cautious. Incoming waves can pull you out to sea with their strong undertow. This is a place to tread carefully, to look and wonder with respect at the mighty forces of nature.
