The national reserve covers an area of 300,000 m2 and is a large ledge near the sea, from which is separated by cliffs with a height of 50-60 meters. At the area there are many interesting historical sites dating from different eras of human existence - from 6 millennium BC until the XI century. Among the most interesting objects are "the cave city" from 101 cave dwellings dated to the period around the 5th millennium BC, an Early Byzantine fortress from the V century, numerous caves used during the Middle Ages as a monastery complex, Thracian necropolis and others.

“Ogancheto” (“The little fire” from Bulgarian) is named after a 50 cm tall flame which burns ceaselessly for over a half century now in a crack between the rocks due to a leak of a naturally inflammable gas.

Cape Kaliakra is one of the most beautiful and historic Capes in Europe. It is a favourite stop for tourists looking for pretty sights and interesting historic places to visit north of Varna. The fortress was successively used by Tracians, Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians. According to legends, the fortress was guarding the treasuries of Lyzimah, successor of Alexander the Great. Today there are quite many remains of those ancient settlements, which can be seen exhibited in a small museum. One can also read there a legend telling the story of several Bulgarian girls who chose to jump from the high cape into the sea but not to be captured and converted to Islam by the Turks. The Kaliakra cape was declared a protected area in 1941.

Pick a spot on the coast and enjoy the morning by observing the sunrise. If you are cold, visit "oguncheto", which is a fireplace, surrounded by rocks, where you could sit and hide from the wind. It is always burning, as there is a natural gas feeding it beneath the rocks.
