Sightseeing

Beautiful gardens all year round. We love taking our young kids here as there are lots of level paths for them to roam and explore safely. If the cafe is open we recommend staying for lunch, the food is excellent!

Dogs allowed all year round at the Sandymere end of the beach all the way round to Appledore. (Not allowed on the Westward Ho end unfortunately). There is usually an icecream van and coffee truck at Sandymere and there is a new cafe opening this summer. Access from parking is a scramble over the pebbles or you can use the newly refurbished path (be warned, the sea often covers the path in pebbles making it a bit wonky! but we still manage to get the pram across with 2 of us)

A level, flat path that runs from Meeth to Braunton all along the river. Perfect for cycling with the kids. Dogs are allowed but must be kept under close control as it is often busy with cyclists. We’d recommend starting behind the BlackSmiths Arms in East The Water and cycling out towards Torrington. You can stop for lunch at the Puffing Billy and the cycle back again. This route is through the woods and crosses lots of little bridges. Another great route is to cycle from the Blacksmiths Arms in East The Water and head over towards Instow. This route follows the river Torridge and is very open to panoramic river views. You can stop for lunch at Johns Deli and get ice creams in Instow.

This is the place you can see from the windows! Beautiful green open space which is grazed by sheep and horses. It’s also gone to the good club so make sure to keep clear of flying golf balls! The burrows wraps around the coast all the way from appledore & Northam round to Westward Ho!

City/town information

Beautifully quaint and just down the road. There are loads of great pubs, art shops and cafes. Enjoy beautiful views across to Appledore or take kids to the park and skate ramp. As kids we used to take our crabbing lines down to fish off the quay and then we'd get fish and chips and a Hockings ice cream. You can walk or cycle there easily, or hop on a bus from round the corner (opposite Windmill lane) There is often a ferry that runs from the quay over to Instow which is one of our favourite things to do for an evening out. Make sure to check the times online though as it’s tide and season dependent!

The beach facing Appledore. There is ample parking and easy access to the beach with prams and wheelchairs. (Not a good beach for swimming though as the river rushes in and the water quality is not up to standard for bathing) Dog friendly all year round and loads of great restaurants and bars.

Just off the A386 on the way between Bideford to Torrington. Used by plenty as access to the River Torridge on kayaks and SUP’s. Known to locals as Little America, this lay-by is a go to place for access to the river by adventure centres and camps.
