Site Santa Fe

Site Santa Fe is a world class modern gallery that exhibits installations, visual arts and films. It's an amazing space and resource in our community. Also, you can go there for free on Saturday morning, 10-12. It's right across from the farmer's market. You could get something to eat there and then just walk over to Site.

Great small museum full of top notch Native art, some of it more political than you'd see in our local galleries.

Great local New Mexico food. Red or green chili! While there are many excellent New Mexican restaurants, we like to get our fix at Atrisco. For those who are not familiar with our regional cuisine, New Mexican food is not the same as Mexican food. It's all in the chili. We particularly love the red chili at Atrisco, though the green is great as well. They also have beer on tap and they make a descent margarita.

Unbeatable South Indian food. Yes, we mean it. We've been to India a lot and this is the real thing. Reasonably priced as well. We recommend the Papa Dosa.

While there are many great places to get your fix of New Mexican food (red or green?), we always come here. Red or green? That's our regional cuisine. If you're new to New Mexico, New Mexican food is not the same as Mexican food. It's all in the chili. We particularly recommend their red chili-- wonderful rich flavor-- though the green is excellent as well.

About half an hour drive away you'll find the Sanctuario in Chimayo. It's an old historic church build upon an even older site sacred to Pueblo people. This is the place where thousands gather on good Friday, sometimes walking from as far away as Albuquerque on pilgrimage. To us, it's the closest thing in Northern New Mexico to a Hindu temple, except perhaps the Hindu temple in Taos. Gods and icons everywhere. Anyway, grab some of the sacred dirt, make a prayer and toss away the crutch you've been leaning on-- just as thousands of others have done. You can read about their healings on the walls of the church.

There is an entire trail system on the east side of the city that is great hiking, pretty much all year around. When your in town ask Marc or Helen for recommendations. They are avid hikers and they will give you plenty of ideas. They also provide hiking and trail info in the room.

Well, it's our place and right below where you'll be staying. Artisan jewelry, handmade right on site. Take a studio tour! Plus, we're the only Fairtrade Gold jeweler in the entire USA. Another cool thing-- we give every one of our guests a $25 gift certificate to our store.

Less than a mile from our place is this cool trading post, which has been around for decades. It's a great place to get your souvenirs without having to pay, as we locals call it, "plaza prices."

The center of our great city-- it's where you'll catch free music in the summer and fall. Santa Fe is a great walking town. From here there are a number of great museums and sites to see- from the Cathedral to the New Mexico history museum and the New Mexico art museum.

A favorite one hour away destination... soak on the hotsprings and take a walk about on trails. It's a world class hotspring spa... Yet this area was once occupied by about 5000 Pueblo people. You can visit the remains of their homes above the springs. Bring your own food or head back to Santa Fe for dinner. The restaurant is generally overpriced and quite mediocre.

The photo of our guide book was taken along the trail. Just head down on Cerrillos Road and keep going straight. It's one of New Mexico's only national scenic byways. You can visit the Cerrillos first-- it was once nearly a ghost town but is now on the rebound, and then Madrid, which has several shops and the famous Mine Shaft Tavern....

An old upgraded hotel, classic Route 66 (which used to run through Santa Fe until the 30s), now has a really cool bar very popular with the Millennial. Often there's live music. It's about a mile away, just down Cerrillos road heading out of town on the left.
