Food scene

The place is fantastic!! They make their donuts to order, so they’re always fresh and hot when you get them. Their other pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and their coffee are also excellent. I recommend getting some donuts and coffee and enjoying them while you sit at one of the waterfront benches and watch the boats go by. It’s about a six-minute walk from the house, and it's a locally loved institution with very friendly owners.

This restaurant is about a 6-minute walk from the house, right next to Half Moon Donut Cafe. It’s a fairly small, funky place with indoor/outdoor seating. Their tacos are superb!

In good weather this is the best place to spend a whole evening sitting outside and gabbing, and it's great for hanging with the children as well. Excellent pizza and beer, oysters on the half shell, but best of all a lovely outdoor atmosphere, and no pressure to fit your visit into any particular time frame.

1st rate food. Almost every ingredient is made from scratch in the kitchen, including fresh bread. We love their cookies, breakfast burritos… Actually, we’ve loved everything we’ve had there. You can buy their fermented foods and sauces to take home with you. We highly recommend this place!

Pretty standard Italian, and pretty delicious, too. They have good service and are a 10-minute walk from the house right in the Rondout, close to the water. They also have outdoor seating when the weather is nice.

Neighborhoods

The neighborhood is historic and it has retained its original character with narrow walkable streets and Victorian architecture. There are restaurants, cafes, bakeries, shops, and museums to explore as well. All of this is along the waterfront of where the Rondout meets the Hudson River.

Nature/Outdoor Activities

“This preserve offers a cornucopia of treats for nature lovers — wildflower-filled grasslands, woods, a waterfall and pond, stunning rock formations and an abundance of wildlife, including beaver, deer, coyotes and turkeys. Just as impressive are the vistas, stretching to the Hudson River and, once the leaves fall, the Catskill Mountains. This natural splendor, combined with the rugged terrain, makes Shaupeneak Ridge one of the region’s prime destinations for mountain biking and trail running.”

4 1/2 miles of nature trails considered easy to moderate. “They … take you among rocky ridges, deep forests, and onto a peninsula in a stunning two-acre pond enabling you to experience the same forest, geologic formations, waterfalls, fern valleys, wildflowers, birds, and wildlife that Burroughs reveled in over a hundred years ago. Trail features include a 55-step stone stairway, boardwalks (one through Burroughs' former celery swamp), and a ladder up a cliff.”
