Food scene

Superb fish suppers along with all you’d expect in a really good fish and chip shop, but also fantastic for pizzas and pasta dishes next door in Anima. (Remember that in Edinburgh you are asked if you want ‘salt and sauce’ – a vinegary brown sauce – so you need to say if you’d prefer to have salt and vinegar on your chips) Henderson Row is only a 10 minute walk – head along Hamilton Place and keep going until you almost get to Dundas St.

Not so much a restaurant as a small café in a Swedish bakery. A loaf of bread is pricey but superb, and the great coffee and freshly baked pizzas go down well. We’ve found that a pizza between two – it comes with a fresh Swedish salad – works well for a light lunch

If you’re looking for something special, head for Leith. Martin Wishart set up his restaurant in 1999 after working with some of Britain’s top chefs, and has been awarded a Michelin Star. Try the more affordable lunch menu. Martin Wishart also has a highly regarded brasserie restaurant, The Honours, which is a short walk from Gloucester Square, on North Castle St (0131 2202513).
