We are so lucky to have a steam railway running past our house. This railway runs from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and stops in Washford which is a mile walk from ElmHut. If you want to see the hidden beauty of the Somerset countryside, this is the perfect way to do it!

If the drive is just as important as the destination, then a trip to Lynton and Lynmouth is a must. The drive is truly stunning as you follow the coast over rolling hills and the views as you approach are spectacular! Whilst you are in the area, a visit to the Valley of the Rocks and Watersmeet is definitely recommended.

There are numerous footpaths to explore in the local area and we have provided an OS map so you can plan your days out (in the drawer under the seat). We are also very close to the Steam Coast Trail which connects the Old Cleeve Road to Washford and there you can pick up the Mineral line to Watchet. Another section runs from Blue Anchor and along the coast to Dunster. For more information visit www.steamcoasttrail.org.

Walking in Somerset/Beaches

We are spoilt in Somerset to have a variety of beaches to choose from which all have their own unique charm. For fossil hunting, head to Doniford/Watchet/Kilve beaches, but if you want long stretches of sand, Minehead and Dunster would be better suited. Blue Anchor is great for walks along the promenade or vast stretches of sand when the tide is out, and Bossington is pebbly but stunning! Just remember that the Somerset coast is tidal so don’t forget to check the tide times and be safe! www.tidetimes.org.uk
