Wander through this converted schoolhouse to gaze at the amazing variety of light fixtures and somewhat unsettling artwork, stop into one of their three bars for a drink, eat in one of their two restaurants or in one of the outdoor seating areas (for a perfect lunch order the cajun tots and the chickpea of the sea sandwich--both in the top ten of the best things to eat in this city IMHO), or grab some pizza and settle into the plush couches in the theatre and catch a movie. Garden-lovers should be sure to stroll around the grounds--they are absolutely amazing. www.mcmenamins.com/kennedy-school

With a 7 minute walk, you'll have many different dining options at a variety of price points. You'll find special occasion dining (Dame and Ripe Cooperative) as well as last minute brunch, lunch and dinner places. For a very Portland coffee experience, we recommend Extracto. If you are looking for pastries with your coffee, get there early--they sell out quickly. In summer, their back patio is a hidden, tree shaded spot to relax.

Another neighborhood street with great food options, starting with Killingsworth with 'Ole Frijole" and heading south to Prescott street and the coffeehouse named "Jezebel's Last Standing Merrygoround". We love Pizza Jerk, Miss Zumstein's Bakery and Coffeeshop, and NEPO 42. The local farmer's market happens every Thursday evening from June through September on 42nd and Alberta.

The most delicious, cheesy, messy meatless-burger you will ever eat is their Veggie Melt. The burgers are great too--they specialize in Carolina-style. But seriously. The Veggie Melt. It is unbelievably good. www.byhpdx.com/

One of our favorite places on Alberta, this place has delicious food and is always inviting. Note: they do allow dogs on their covered, insulated patio, so if you are allergic or dog-averse, sit inside. Open everyday for breakfast and lunch. Note, last I checked their website, it looked like they might be switching to reservations only, so you might need to plan a bit ahead for this place. It's worth the effort. https://www.tinshedgardencafe.com/

If you love french pastries (and who does not) this is the place to go. You can order from the display case and head 3 blocks north to Alberta Park for a pastry picnic. Or sit down for a scrumptious meal in the beautiful space. My recommendation? The French Onion Soup. It is perfection. Petite Provence is a local chain, with eight restaurants around the region. Always a reliable place to grab lunch. Open daily for breakfast and lunch, Tuesday-Saturday for dinner too. www.provencepdx.com/pp-ne-alberta

Looking for an espresso drink with a morning pastry? Stroll around the corner and cross the street to visit the friendly folks at Kiss Coffee. This black owned business has been around for a few years and is always busy. And is so close, you could shuffle over in your slippers. If they have the Chai Scone available, get it! Open Tuesday-Saturday until 2:30pm. https://www.kisscoffeepdx.com/

Sightseeing

This beautiful park is a lovely destination, an easy walk from our place, and has ball fields and a track, a playground, an extensive unfenced dog park, and a beautiful wooded area above the dog park. Note, this park is best enjoyed by dog lovers. Few pet owners follow the leash rule or makes any effort to stay within the boundary of the off-leash area. But if you like trees, tennis, dogs or jogging, this park is for you. And in the summer we have concerts here that are well attended and so much fun! Beside the track is a large empty field that once held a local middle school that was torn down in 2007 due to radon, which naturally occurs in the area, but the school wasn't built to ventilate properly.

This park has some beautiful old trees, a nature path, basketball and tennis courts. If you come at the right time, you might catch a game of roller hockey. This park has an off leash dog park, but pet owners are better about respecting the off-leash area limits than at Fernhill.

This large park has the City of Roses' oldest rose garden as well as some historic structures. Roses in Portland last all summer and into fall. Definitely worth a walk through. (6 min drive/23 min bus ride/40 min walk)
