City/town information

Nestled amongst the hills on the NE side of Dartmoor with easy access to the A30, Chagford boasts a microclimate which gives it more sunshine and drier weather than the western side of the moor. The small town circles around its octagonal Market House fondly called the Pepperpot, and in short walking distance you will discover many fine old granite buildings, the beautiful church of St Michael and a wealth of unusual independent shops and art galleries. You will be spoilt for choice for eating with most places using local and organic food; there are boutique hotels, much loved local pubs and inns, several tearooms, cafes and a wonderful delicatessen. For walkers and nature lovers there are miles of open moorland to explore with its stone rows and circles, clapper bridges and ancient dwellings etc, or for a contrast the beautiful River Teign which meanders around the village and on through the Teign Gorge overlooked by Castle Drogo owned by the National Trust and on to the beauty spot of Fingle Bridge. There is also the tranquillity of Fernworthy reservoir. For those seeking peace and quiet and an escape from the hustle and bustle or a quieter pace of life Chagford is ideal, but it also has plenty going on with its famous festivals such as the Chagstock music festival, Chagford Film Festival and Chagford Literary Festival. It even boasts a wonderful heated open air swimming pool fed by the River Teign. Chagford is often called the friendliest place on Dartmoor, so do come along and see for yourself, you may never want to leave!

Castle Drogo is situated high above the Teign Gorge. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for self-made millionaire Julius Drewe. It looks ancient, but this remarkable building was only constructed 100 years ago, the last castle ever built in England. From the beginning it has suffered from water penetration and has for the last 8 years been undergoing a conservation project to make the Castle watertight. As the building work comes to an end the interior of the castle has been redisplayed after years in storage. Once reopened, you can explore the castles refreshed layout, discover its precious treasures, fascinating stories, and unique history. Outside the castle, stroll around the formal gardens, alive with colour throughout the seasons. Or explore the Teign Valley with its ancient gorge, teeming with wildlife. There’s a variety of routes to suit all abilities. No visit is complete without a stop to recharge in the café, serving traditional Devon cream teas and many more seasonal and locally sourced options.

This site takes its name from a small oak wood. This amazing woodland is important for the mosses and lichens that festoon the trees and the impressive granite boulders found on the site. However, this National Nature Reserve of 170ha mainly consists of a model example of the upland heathland and has a wealth of moorland birds. Wistman’s Wood is in the Dart river valley and has views of wild Devon that you won’t find anywhere else in the country.

One of Devon's biggest and most intact stone circles, situated on Gidleigh Common. Only thirty four stones remain of an original sixty five to seventy, and only twenty five of those are still standing. Two cart tracks run right through the ring, making its appearance even more impressive. The tallest of the stones is over 8 feet high.
