Local Hiking

This hike opens to spectacular 360 views and the trailhead is located at the end of our street!
Outside is your playground. We are close to Pike National Forest, so there are tons of trailheads in the area. There are so many options, but the two closest are just a short drive or walk to the end of our street! The end of Mountainview Drive leads you to the Pennsylvania trailhead. In the winter, you just park your car and walk about a half mile or so to the official trailhead. You may need snowshoes once there. Generally it is packed enough to walk it through the treed path to the start. In the spring/summer, marmots will squeak at you as you follow the trail up the mountain and as the trees fall out, the journey opens up to showcase spectacular 360, mountaintop views. If you can get past the trees, the view is jaw-dropping. If you rent or supply your own snowshoes, this hike is navigable in the winter as well. The second closest trail is called Pika Trailhead. This is located by heading up Mountainview, go right on the first turn for Prunes Place, then left on Prune Ct. It'll be at the end of that road, just before it makes a hard left turn to go back to MtnView. It's a shorter trail, but very lovely. This is again somewhat navigable in the winter with snowshoes.

If you're in to summitting a mountain - we have about 56 mountains whose peak is over 14,000ft (known as "14ners") here in Colorado. Mt Sherman is classified as a Class 2 mountain, so it is very challenging but doable if you'd like to summit without gear. We also have 4 together just up the road in Alma. You can summit 3 in one day there if you like. Permit at the parking required.

Things to do in town

In Fairplay the museum is an awesome family experience and is open May-Oct. I was skeptical, but this unique experience is very cool. They have collected old buildings from around the county and transported them here to Fairplay where they have become "South Park City". They're pretty fascinating- you can see an old school house with actual classwork displayed. There's a hotel, pharmacy, saloon and even dentist office- yikes! There's even an old steam train you can explore. Once you've spent the day there, you can walk around the town and check out the cute shops. You will find a few good restaurants, an awesome ice cream shop, various cute shops, bars, etc., and further down the road is a well rounded grocery, Ace hardware and auto supply. In the middle of downtown is the Fairplay beach- this is awesome for kids. The fly fishermen come out in droves to fish the calm water. There's a pier for the kids to fish off of, and the little lake turns into a stream which is perfect for gold panning. You can buy licenses and gold panning passes at the High Alpine shop in downtown Fairplay, just across from the beach. If you want to swim, the rec center in town has an indoor pool, steam room & gym, and you can purchase day passes. The cabin is half-way between Alma and Fairplay, so we recommend you visit both. Alma is the highest incorporated town in the US, and there is a shortcut to Alma through our neighborhood. The pizza at their saloon is really good, and the Al-mart is a definite must visit.

We LOVE this little shop! The owner, Nicole, has a goat farm so she sources all of the milk herself. She makes soaps, lotions, and other items loaded with luxurious smelling lavender. The art and cute pieces are wonderful take-home items.

Favorite things to check out within an hour drive

Hot springs, the Continental Divide, Breckenridge, Montgomery Reservoir, etc. are all within a short drive.
Mt Princeton Hot Springs are the coolest-ok, the coolest warm springs nearby! They have a large pool for the kids, a soaking pool for the adults and you can go down to the hot creek and make your very own hot tub with stones. There's also an amazing spa with all of the traditional services. The kids will love it, even in the summer, and it's pretty cool to sit in the warm creek springs and have it snowing on you. 45 min drive.

Montgomery Reservoir is a high elevation (10,873 feet) manmade lake that sits in a beautiful alpine setting between Alma, Colorado and Hoosier Pass. It’s located only about ten minutes from town. There are several hikes in the area, one of which runs alongside a waterfall to an old mine.

We adore this little general store. Set in an old saloon, it's on the way to Breckenridge (or on the way home) if you need to stock up on some basics. They even have a Carhartt store room attached. Tell Richard at the front counter that Sam and Steph sent you!

Frisco Adventure Park offers tubing and other winter activities. If you want to sled for free, just buy some sleds at the ACE hardware in Fairplay and head to Carver Park in Breck to their sledding hill. Super family friendly.

Breckenridge is about 21 miles away. This could take you 45min in winter. There's a ton to do- great restaurants, an ice skating rink, shops, and obviously the ski resort itself. The gondola offers free rides in summer and it's worth the drive over. You can eat at the top of the mountain and there is Putt Putting and other family friendly activities on the mountain offered all year round.

Conseils sur la ville

Déplacements

Navigating the roads

In the winter, you must have an AWD vehicle, and this is no joke. Your trip will be so much better when you can safely navigate the roads and it's worth the extra cost. If you plan to ski Breck, driving over Hoosier Pass can be somewhat treacherous during the winter without this feature and I wouldn't recommend driving in rural Colorado in the winter without it. In the summer, you don't need it, but know that we live up a pothole filled road, so a car that's a bit higher like an SUV would do better than a sedan , but it's not necessary. I promise the drive is worth the stay, though!
