Monserrate is a high mountain over 10,000 feet high that dominates the city center of Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia. It rises to 3,152 meters above the sea level, where there is a church with a shrine, devoted to El Señor Caído. The Mountain, already considered sacred in pre-Columbian times when the area was inhabited by the indigenous Muisca, is a pilgrim destination, as well as a major tourist attraction. In addition to the church, the summit contains restaurants, cafeteria, souvenir shops and many smaller tourist facilities. Monserrate can be accessed by aerial tramway, by funicular, or by climbing, the preferred way of pilgrims. The climbing route was previously closed due to wildfires and landslides caused by a drought, but it reopened in 2017. All downtown Bogotá, south Bogotá and some sections of the north of the city are visible facing west, making it a popular destination to watch the sunset over the city. Every year, Monserrate and its neighbour Guadalupe attract many tourists.

The Cathedral Metropolitan Basilica of Bogotá & Primate of Colombia, officially the Cathedral Basilica Metropolitan & Primate of the Immaculate Conception & Saint Peter of Bogotá, is a Roman Catholic cathedral located at the eastern side of Bolívar Square in Bogotá, D.C., Colombia. It is seat of the Archbishop of Bogotá, Luis José Rueda Aparicio. The Cathedral was built four-times in the same place. The first construction took place between 1556-1565 to replace the original thatched chapel, but due to poor foundation it later collapsed. The second construction took place around in 1572, yet the earthquake of 1785 reduced it to ruins. The fourth and final construction occurred between 1807 and 1823. It is said to be built by descendants of Jesuit missionaries. When the Spanish conquerors officially founded the city of Bogotá, they established in 12 huts and a hay-church, that -after being totally built- would take the name of Archbishopric Cathedral of Bogotá. The cathedral holds the remains of Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, founder of Bogotá. The cathedral, its area 5,300 square meters, is the biggest in Colombia and one of the biggest ones in South America.

While “Chapinero” technically covers a huge stretch of Bogota that includes the hip neighborhoods of La Zona Rosa and Chicó y el Parque 93, most locals distinguish Chapinero from these neighboring areas. Occupying the northern east of the city, Chapinero is home to some of Bogota’s most affluent residents, and it’s also the major hub of university activity within the city. And due to its prime location, it provides easy access to both those neighborhoods and the traditional downtown. As might be expected by a neighborhood with a well-heeled, young, and educated populace, there’s a distinctly bohemian vibe to the area. Chapinero is a pretty small neighborhood, and that means that visitors staying in the area can get practically anywhere they want on foot. If you’re looking for an LGBQT-friendly place to stay in Bogota, you’ll definitely want to check out Chapinero Alto. This mini-neighborhood is known among some locals as Chapigay because it’s home to one of the city’s largest gay populations. But even outside of Chapinero Alto, the neighborhood is well-regarded for its large number of high-end restaurants and hip little boutiques and coffee shops. While there aren’t much in the way of historical landmarks, Chapinero is ideal for visitors who want a base camp that offers them some insulation from the more chaotic hustle and bustle of the city.
