Coqui frogs, though relatively new to Hawai’i in past decades, offer your own personal symphony every night as the sun drops below the horizon into the clear blue Pacific.

Less than 2 miles as the crow flies from Manta Soul, Kealakekua Bay awaits, home to spinner dolphins that thrive in its warm protected waters. Art galleries, restaurants, and shops dot the main road to Kona, an old harbor town with tons of charm. Whether you prefer to kayak, swim, scuba dive, or surf; to hike, visit galleries, or the only live volcanos just an hour away; or whether you stay close to the property working, writing, making art, or delving into the depths of yourself in a natural setting, a multitude of options for recreation, relaxation or reflection are available.

Hawai’i island commonly called the “Big” island to differentiate it from the state (also named Hawai’i), is the largest of the Hawai’ian islands, and also the largest island in the United States. It is the third-largest island in Polynesia, behind the two main islands of New Zealand. The Big Island’s population of around 187,000 comprises only 13% of Hawai’i’s people on 4,028 square miles. It is the third most visited island in Hawai’i by tourists each year. The Big Island has five volcanoes, and two of them are active.

The goddess of fire and volcanoes, Pelehonuamea (often called Pele), whose name means “She who shapes the sacred land,” is deeply respected in Hawai’ian culture for her ability to both destroy and create as she births new firmament with molten lava. In fact, Hawaiian cosmology says she is the creator of the Hawaiian islands. At Manta Soul, we honor Pele as a powerful sacred feminine force that bridges the visible and invisible worlds.

Rent a kayak and enjoy a few fun, relaxing hours exploring the crystalline waters of Kealakekua Bay. Take snorkel gear and hop in for a refreshing dip near the Captain Cook monument, where you’ll see a variety of gorgeous tropical fish. If you’re lucky, the spinner dolphins might show up and put on a show. (Be sure to stay at least 50 yards away as the dolphins are protected in these waters, and do not dock or tie your kayak on the shore of Captain Cook monument in accordance with laws that preserve the shoreline.) There is also a chance you might also see turtles and even manta rays!

For rentals, we recommend Ehu and Kai, a kayak and SUP rental place where you can pick up your rental at Kealakekua Bay without having to haul it yourself! Or, if you prefer to sit back, relax, enjoy the scenery and get a guided, personalized tour of Kealakekua Bay, outrigger canoe tours can be a great option, though these need to be reserved in advance to ensure a guide is available.
