Sightseeing

With the entrance to the trailhead just a 10-minute walk from Manta Soul, this 3.75-mile roundtrip hike traverses lush vegetation, dropping down to Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook Monument which commemorates the British commander killed there in 1779. Reachable only by boat, kayak, or foot, the waters there at the monument are one of the best snorkeling spots on the island, and home to pods of spinner dolphins. The hike is rated difficult, since there is a mile of uphill hiking on the return, but depending on what you want, you can hike a few minutes down the trail and a few minutes back up for a gorgeous open-air workout, or make a day of it and go all the way down to jump in the refreshing tropical waters as your reward. A reasonable, active pace will take you about 45 minutes to go down and about an hour to come back up.

Kealakekua Bay, home to calm waters, sacred cliffs, sea turtles, manta rays, and pods of magnificent spinner dolphins, is accessible by car in about 15 minutes, and you can rent kayaks near the shore and traverse the bay at your leisure. Many days the dolphins are out and about, showing their moves by jumping and spinning in the air, as they rest, relax, and play after a night of feeding offshore. They are protected by federal law, so you may not approach them closer than 50 feet, either swimming or in a kayak, but if they are willing to approach you, you can enjoy their proximity while making sure you move gently and respect them as you are a guest in their home.

Just 15 minutes from Manta Soul, Manini Beach offers fabulous views of the Kealakekua cliffs and the Captain Cook Monument across the water, features picnic tables in the shelter of a lovely old kiave tree, and elegant palm trees that kiss the lava rock shore. Colored tropical fish swim amongst the coral It's an ideal spot to jump in for a quick morning swim after a walk around the tiny village, or pack a lunch and spend the day alternating snorkel/swims and a good book to read in the shade. This is also the Bay where spinner dolphins live and play, so hopefully, you might see some! While the beach is mainly comprised of small bits of lava rock and coral, there is a sandy shoreline area cutting through the reef that offers easy ocean entry, with good snorkeling and SCUBA diving when the ocean is calm. Visibility is usually pretty good for snorkeling toward the right side of the channel. The left side can have more ocean swells and waves that can make the water choppy.

A furious journey of Life or Death was determined by the Gods: Imagine you had just broken the sacred laws, the kapu, and the only punishment was death. Your only chance of survival is to elude your pursuers and reach the Puʻuhonua, a place of refuge. The Puʻuhonua protected the kapu breaker, defeated warriors, as well as civilians during the time of battle. No physical harm could come to those who reached the boundaries of the Puʻuhonua. This spiritual sanctuary, commemorated today as Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park was protected by Lono, the God of life. Today, the puʻuhonua continues to serve as a refuge for all peoples in our modern world. Built of native materials in 1838 by Governor John Adams Kuakini, Hulihe‘e Palace on Ali‘i Drive was home to Hawaiian royalty. Upon the Governor’s death, the palace with its three-foot thick walls was passed on to his son William Pitt Leleiohoku, who died shortly thereafter. Leleiohoku’s wife, Princess Ruth Luka Ke`elikōlani inherited the palace, which was later passed on to Princess Bernice Pau‘ahi Bishop. The palace was purchased by King David Kalākaua and Queen Kapi‘olani after Pau‘ahi’s death and later inherited by their sons, Prince Kūhiō Kalaniana`ole and Prince David Kawānanakoa. In 1914, the property was sold and its contents auctioned. Today, Hulihe‘e Palace contains most of its original furnishings and houses a magnificent collection of memorabilia and Hawaiian artifacts.

The serenity of the slopes of an ancient volcano

Manta Soul™ offers a relaxed ambiance and a restful jungle retreat to renew and restore deep connections with nature and self. At one point in its history, the verdant vegetation was cultivated as a macadamia nut farm, and a variety of animals and tropical plants still thrive in the current ecosystem, including many varieties of birds as well as mongoose, rabbits, chickens, and wild pigs. Coqui frogs, though relatively new to Hawai’i in past decades, offer your own personal symphony every night as the sun drops below the horizon into the clear blue Pacific.

Magical Kealakekua Bay is minutes away

Less than 2 miles as the crow flies from Manta Soul, Kealakekua Bay awaits, home to spinner dolphins that thrive in its warm protected waters. Art galleries, restaurants, and shops dot the main road to Kona, an old harbor town with tons of charm. Whether you prefer to kayak, swim, scuba dive, or surf; to hike, visit galleries, or the only live volcanos just an hour away; or whether you stay close to the property working, writing, making art, or delving into the depths of yourself in a natural setting, a multitude of options for recreation, relaxation or reflection are available.

About the Big Island

Hawai’i island commonly called the “Big” island to differentiate it from the state (also named Hawai’i), is the largest of the Hawai’ian islands, and also the largest island in the United States. It is the third-largest island in Polynesia, behind the two main islands of New Zealand. The Big Island’s population of around 187,000 comprises only 13% of Hawai’i’s people on 4,028 square miles. It is the third most visited island in Hawai’i by tourists each year. The Big Island has five volcanoes, and two of them are active.

About Pele, the Goddess of Fire and Volcanoes

The goddess of fire and volcanoes, Pelehonuamea (often called Pele), whose name means “She who shapes the sacred land,” is deeply respected in Hawai’ian culture for her ability to both destroy and create as she births new firmament with molten lava. In fact, Hawaiian cosmology says she is the creator of the Hawaiian islands. At Manta Soul, we honor Pele as a powerful sacred feminine force that bridges the visible and invisible worlds.

Why kayak on Kealakekua Bay?

Rent a kayak and enjoy a few fun, relaxing hours exploring the crystalline waters of Kealakekua Bay. Take snorkel gear and hop in for a refreshing dip near the Captain Cook monument, where you’ll see a variety of gorgeous tropical fish. If you’re lucky, the spinner dolphins might show up and put on a show. (Be sure to stay at least 50 yards away as the dolphins are protected in these waters, and do not dock or tie your kayak on the shore of Captain Cook monument in accordance with laws that preserve the shoreline.) There is also a chance you might also see turtles and even manta rays!

Where can you rent kayaks and SUPs?

For rentals, we recommend Ehu and Kai, a kayak and SUP rental place where you can pick up your rental at Kealakekua Bay without having to haul it yourself! Or, if you prefer to sit back, relax, enjoy the scenery and get a guided, personalized tour of Kealakekua Bay, outrigger canoe tours can be a great option, though these need to be reserved in advance to ensure a guide is available. Snorkel gear is also available for a small fee, or bring your own. SUPS (Stand up Paddle Boards) are also available General kayak rental pricing: Single: 45.00 Double: 65.00 Triple: 85.00 (2 adults + 1 child)
