Sightseeing (nature, scenery, hiking, etc.)

Great views, an interesting history, and educational exhibit, makes this a must see. Tours are also seasonally available. Be warned, you have to pay a fee to access the visitor center, lighthouse and grounds, but it is worth it. If you wish to just see the lighthouse, there is a scenic overlook pull-off just south of the lighthouse, which doesn't cost anything. During the off season, you can usually walk the trails free of charge.

The road I live on is truly magical, as many folks take walks, look for agates along the shore, and enjoy the peace and solitude of nature. This looped road connects to The Scenic Highway on each end.

This beach area is managed and owned by one of the mining companies, so it is sometimes closed to the public, yet it is truly a gem of a place to visit, swim and picnic. Two honey rock out-croppings frame the beach cove between, where you can play on the black pebbled shore or swim in the cool waters. Truly a lovely and safe place to have a picnic and enjoy some solitude.

Many wish to see moose, wolf and other animals, and the Gunflint Trail is a wonderful location to attempt to do so. Miles of scenic roads and trails offer all sorts of natural vantage points. Note that it is outside of Grand Marais which is a 1 hour and 45 minute drive from my house. Worth the drive if you are willing to get up early and have a few days to stay in the area.

Towns with Lots to Do

Grand Marais is an hour and forty-five minute drive from my home, yet is well worth the drive, especially if you are staying with me for a few days. The town offers many wonderful shops, restaurants, bars and beautiful scenery. The bay area often has sailboats and there is a Coast Guard station, along with one of the five historic lighthouses along the North Shore. It is very much a seasonal artist community, so much of the town shuts down in the winter, though it is a great jumping off point to the Gunflint Trail.

I am not adding this as a recommendation, it is to give you more details. To me, it is not the best aquarium that I have ever seen, and like most aquariums, is a bit expensive to visit. If you would like to see some of the types of fish that live in the lake, along with some River Otters, you will enjoy this aquarium. It is a lovely building and there are some kids activities. They also often have special exhibits available.
