Parks & Nature

Such a beautiful park. I was raised in elizabeth NJ and this park is in all the years of my life. I just keep coming back. It captured my heart. Such a peaceful place to be, with water sprinklers in the summer, boats, iceskating in the winter, a beautiful lake, just a walk through any season will capture your heart. HISTORY: Warinanco refers to an Indian who sold land to settlers. The City’s most extensive park. 1921 - creation of the Union County Park System, first president Henry Summers Chatfield (1864-1933), memorialized with a stone bench in Warinanco Park’s tulip garden. 1923 -- the noted landscape design firm, Olmsted Associates (founded by Frederick Law Olmsted [1822-1903], the designer of Central Park in NYC among many other projects) completes plans for "Elizabeth Park" in Union County, NJ, now Warinanco Park. FACILITIES: bicycle path, boating (row boats and pedal boats rented on an hourly basis), skating center (home to Westfield High School ice hockey team), tennis courts and running track; winding trails, huge trees, flower gardens, ice skating rink, track, fitness course, tennis courts, football, soccer and baseball fields; kids’ playgrounds, and a water spray for children in the summer. There are beautiful views of green fields, and nearby flows the Elizabeth River. Azalea Garden, located just north of the Warinanco Park Administration Building (Source: Elizabeth Through the Ages.)

On the New York Harbor, less than 2,000 feet from the Statue of Liberty, Liberty State Park has served a vital role in the development of New Jersey's metropolitan region and the history of the nation. During the 19th and early 20th centuries the area that is now Liberty State Park was a major waterfront industrial area with an extensive freight and passenger transportation network. This network became the lifeline of New York City and the harbor area. The heart of this transportation network was the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal (CRRNJ), located in the northern portion of the park.

Skylands 1,119 acres (4.5 km²), also known as the New Jersey Botanical Garden, is a mansion and 96-acre (390,000 m2) botanical garden in Ringwood State Park in the borough of Ringwood, located within the Ramapo Mountains in Passaic County in the state of New Jersey, United States. Its formal gardens are open to the public year round. The house and gardens, including formal gardens and specimen plantings, were built in the 1920s by Clarence MacKenzie Lewis, a New York City stockbroker and civil engineer. Lewis hired architect John Russell Pope to design the 44-room Tudor revival manor house. The manor is a reproduction English mansion featuring rectangular, bay and oriel windows. A nine-hole golf course once graced this property. In 1966 the entire estate was bought by the State of New Jersey to form a State Botanical Garden whose settings include a Lilac Garden, Magnolia Walk, the Wild Flower Garden, the Crab Apple Vista, an allée of 166 trees extending almost a half-mile, and the Perennial Garden. The entire section now comprises slightly over 4,000 acres (16 km²) of parkland. The Winter Garden included New Jersey's largest Jeffery pine (Pinus jeffreyi). Its east side features a weeping beech beside a century-old upright beech, as well as a Japanese umbrella pine. Other interesting non-native trees include an Algerian fir (Abies numidica) and Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica).

The beautiful warm store houses an enormous array of delicious and eye appealing breads, cakes and pastries. From the simple goodness of the multigrain loaf with raisins to the incredible creamy sensation of their pastel de nata (custard cup) who can walk away with a mere single item? There are dozens of different breads and rolls to choose from and hundreds of desserts to temp the palate. Their deli carries a full line of Boars Head deli meats which when paired with Pinho's freshly baked bread, creates a sandwich that brings their regulars in 6 days a week (Closed Mondays). Their grill is also opened to provide breakfast sandwiches, hot lunch specials and even homemade meatloaf (on Thursdays). Breakfast and lunch have never been so fast, delicious and reasonable.
