Rachel is host extraordinaire! Choose a wildlife cruise...or a 'water taxi' trip across to Portobello for a few hours - she'll take you and your bike if you want alternative transport over there ...or get dropped off onto Quarantine Island for self-guided walking and exploring, as a restorative retreat - take your own picnic. She is skilled in the wildlife and history of the Harbour, and will keep you gently informed and noticing 'who else' is on the water with you!

The predator-proof fence around Orokonui Ecosanctuary enables long-lost native species of birds and ground creatures to begin again to thrive. The conservation programmes around reintroducing kaka, native skinks and takahe have been highly successful. It is possible to visit the Sanctuary Visitor Centre and have a great education experience for no cost, or grab yourself a quiet cuppa at Horopito Cafe inside the Centre - why not take a gentle meditative walk in the Pa Harakeke near the top of the driveway as you drink it? For a more immersive experience, pay to enter through the predator-proof fence and wander the tracks in the valley from cloud forest to valley floor if you want... chat with us and it might be possible to synch our timetables so we drop you off at the Centre, and you walk down through the Sanctuary and out 'the bottom gate ' and around the Orokonui Estuary track back to our bnb.

The Gallery has food and drink service. live music most weekends, and 'events' other nights of the week. Closed Tuesdays. Check their calendar as you go past at the entrance to Waitati. Many of our guests have recommended it as a gentle place to meet other locals and kick back for dinner or drinks.

Blueskin Library is an extension of the Dunedin CIty Libraries, and has free wifi, and a great range of books and newspapers. The ambience is gentle, and you're welcome to hang out and relax in the Library.

Mel and Matt are friendly hosts at HSM. Open daily Thurs-Monday till 5pm, on the right as you come into the village off the motorway. Supplies of delicious bread, cheese, salami, salads, veges, fruit, mustards, pickles, crackers, milk, meat... most produce is organic. Everything you need to make yourself a grazing table or take a food gift home from local food suppliers. Also - best secret - Pure Icecream from Wanaka!! Treat yourself... Right opposite Blueskin Gallery and Kitchen. (We love using our soup bowl holders - a Waitati treat on a cold night)
