Hiking in the Huajatolla Valley

There is hiking available at the end of the road, past little kansas. Parking is questionable and their is a less than gentlemanly gentleman that may give you a hard time. The road is public as is the trail. There is also 4wheel driving/ hiking up bulls-eye mine, also located toward the end of the road. Finally, there is an itty bitty, unmaintained, and occasionally treacherous dear trail out the backyard of the house. This little climb and hike is not for the faint of heart, but you'll be rewarded with killer views of the valley.

Hiking in Surrounding Areas

There is abundant hiking in the area. Swing by the La Veta Visitor's Center or Bachman and Associates for a free and detailed hand drawn map of the area's trails and additional information. You will find the hiking to be refreshingly uncrowded. The North Fork Trail, West Spanish Peaks Trail, and Spring Creek Trail are all quite popular, beautiful and uncrowded.

Fishing

Fishing is available at Lathrop State Park near Walsenburg; Daigre and Wahatoya Lakes in La Veta; There is also superb fishing at Monument and North Lakes a little further South of Cuchara on Hwy 12. Its a beautiful drive and worth the visit.

Day Trips

Cuchara- definitely check out the small village of Cuchara. Its a small town rare gem. There is put-put golf, a few restaurants, occasional live music, and shopping available. Cuchara Mountain Park: This defunct ski resort has been transformed into an outdoor rec space by area residents. Hiking, mountain biking, disc golf, and put put golf are available. Be aware that his area is run by volunteers and no amenities or activities are guaranteed. Lathrop State Park: Colorado's First State Park offers walking and biking trails and two lakes, one of which is good for a day of swimming.

Day Trips Continued

Great Sand Dunes National Park: If you haven't been then you need to go! It can be hot hot in the summer, so get there early for hiking and boarding the dunes. There is a river that dries up mid-season. If you've come this far, be sure to finish your day with a stop at the Sand Dunes swimming pool (also known as Hooper Hot springs). The pool is a hot springs. There is also an adult-only area inside of a large greenhouse style enclosure.

Farmers market

I do believe this is on Thursday from 3-5 in the courtyard of the LaVeta Library. It can appear that there is a line to get in, but that is actually just for a specific booth. Walk right in and enjoy yourself!
