Food Scene

I love this place for their friendly service and yummy food (also good for veggies like me!). It's colorful and family-friendly, and also has a cozy little bar with big-screen TVs on the side. My kids and I have watched the Superbowl here! (We ordered lots of appetizers and food for the experience.)

This shop has some really craveable desserts--my current favorites are the creme brûlée and the eclairs, but the choices are myriad. Oh, and the biscotti.....! Don't be fooled by the fact that it looks tiny from the outside--they have really lovely desserts and friendly service.

Essentials

A full grocery store at a very walkable distance from my place! They always have fresh produce at reasonable prices, and a nice florist section. This used to be an Italian grocery store called Cerretani's, and while the pasta aisle is not quite the same now it's still decent.

Fans of Whole Foods love the famous produce section that looks like Cezanne might want to paint it. There's also a big gluten-free selection.

I mention this for TJ's aficionados, because it is a 10-minute drive away. So many choices, and for a quick and affordable meal in I love their frozen section. It's provided many delicious meals of Indian food for my family, but there are many other selections and cuisines too! Varied cheese section (get your Gruyere or Fontina for fondue!), good bread. Don't forget to pick up a nice tarte or ice cream for dessert.

Shopping

This small shop has an amazing collection of gifts, many made by local artists and artisans. I particularly love the small original paintings that line the walls (yes, I bought one and love it). Great jewelry, cards, some clothing and many other unexpected and delightful things.

Getting Around

A great option for getting in to Boston without the expense and hassle of parking. It's quick and within 20 minutes you will be at North Station (next to the Boston Garden). Check the schedule for leaving and arrival times. Love this option because it's just a couple of blocks from my place, a very easy walk.

The T (Boston-speak for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) is terrific because it has a frequent schedule and will get you a ton of places without the need to park at the other end. In Melrose Oak Grove Station is just under a mile from my place, and has parking. The T can get you from Oak Grove to North Station in 14 minutes.

Parks & Nature

Ell Pond is the centerpiece of a great little 2 mile walk or jog. Swans, water turtles, and squirrels are some of the animals that make their home here. While all of the route is on sidewalks there is the option to walk to the bank also. Along Main Street the route goes through a small park with an attractive gazebo--good for photo ops!--and benches. The pond was once the site of a sawmill, with the first dam built about 1669.

Arts & Culture

Melrose Public Library is a true local resource for people in Melrose. It also has a great story of how town citizens pulled together to create this resource for the community. It began as an idea, was approved and funded in 1871 by the town, and eventually outgrew its rented rooms. The core of the present building was funded by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, who granted $25,000 on the condition that the town provide land for the building and $2,500 every year to support and maintain the library. You can see a medallion with his portrait in the entry hall, as a sign that this is one of the "Carnegie libraries."
