Neighbourhood

Fairlight Cove is a peaceful village, nestled in the hill side just below Fairlight Village, at the top of the hill. Many of the homes are bungalows and the only shops are the Post Office and Village Stores on the main road just before the turning into the village, a Travel Agents and Hairdressers. Just around the corner of the main road travelling East, and also within walking distance, is a handy little farm shop. The village pub "The Cove" has recently been renovated and reopened and serves good food. Just around the corner from our bungalow you reach the coastal path to the Hastings Country Park or "Firehills", just a five minute stroll away. At the weekend, there are quite a few families and dog walkers enjoying the scenery, but for much of the week it is very quiet and a beautiful place to find peace, enjoy the views and listen to birdsong. In the early morning and evening, the light in the sky and on the sea is ever changing and lovely. On very clear days, you can see France in the distance. Turning right and then right again from our house, you reach Commanders Way. Turn left and after a few metres you will find the Cricket and Bowling greens and a nice playground for children, with a wooded area behind. https://goo.gl/maps/qNPG96PPU4fNnS3W7 If you walk to the end of Lower Waites Lane, the coastal footpath leading eastward to Pett Level Beach, with further beautiful views along the way. It is about a 30 minute walk.

Camber Sands can be very busy in the summer, but fabulous sands and great for families. Apply sun cream if sunny. If it is breezy it is easy not to notice you are burning. Also take care of currents, sinking sand and tides. There is now a life guard during busy periods.

A little bit further to drive to, but a beautiful castle to walk around. There is also a steam railway line to Tenterden for a special day out.

Just around the corner and absolutely lovely. You can visit every day! There is a Visitors centre with cafe at the top and another cafe in Fairlight Village, near the church. The church tower is sometimes open to visitors climb up and look at the view. You might spot seals swimming in the sea below the cliffs.

As well as the beach, you can look out over the wildlife reserve and pasture land to look at the water birds. Binoculars a good idea if you have them. There are fossils to be found, if you don't mind clambering over large boulders. Fabulous opportunities for photographers. The old breakwaters, interesting rocks and rock pools in the evening or morning sunlight can make great photographs.

City/town information

The old town is very interesting but the town centre area not quite so attractive. There are good shops in the centre and several supermarkets. There is a cinema, some amusements, a restored pier and pebbly beach. Alexandra Park is very nice too.

Direct trains from Hastings Station take about 2 hours. From Rye, slightly quicker but have to change at Ashford International.

Possibly the smallest town in all of England. Winchelsea is set on a hill top with beautiful views. It used to be a port town, but now is surrounded by countryside. it has an interesting history.

Déplacements

A car is your best option but there are also buses.

The 101 Bus leaves once an hour to Rye and to Hastings, but only until about 6pm. The bus stop is near the roundabout. https://www.stagecoachbus.com/routes/south-east/101/rye-conquest-hospital/xfbo101.i Taxis are not too expensive from the station but cheapest to book in advance.

Changeable weather

Fairlight has its own micro weather system. It might be raining in Rye or Hastings, but sunny here, or visa versa. Summers aren't always sunny (although has more sunshine than most other regions in England) and winters are usually milder than other parts of the UK. Always best to have a raincoat handy and layers you can take off if it gets hot.
