Get a biscuit from the Walk-in to help cure your hangover from all the beer you drank at the brewery the night before or get a sandwich and some snacks before you hit the river and do it all over again.

They have a great selection of wholesome options (veggie burgers/soy milk) as well as the real necessities (beer/cigarettes) as well as fresh eggs. They’re the next hamlet over in Debruce on your way towards town. Open till 7 most days.

Great wines by Meg and Kevin who also own the wine shop across the street. Enjoy the food and wine in their beautiful garden or their cozy wine bar on a cold night. Our friends Johnny and Elizabeth from the High Meadow Project are doing the food in the weekends and the patio in back is the place to be in the summer.

Hiking

There’s some great hikes a short drive from our place. I do most hiking in the winter on snow shoes which you can rent from Lisa at Morgan Outdoors in Hurleyville. Please check local conditions and have proper equipment. There is generally NO SERVICE once you head into Willowemoc Wild Forrest. You will need to download google maps for the drive to trailhead and have a picture or a map of the trails you will be hiking !
You can rent snow shoes and get any advice you might need from Lisa.

Frick pond is our favorite hike nearby. It’s a short drive from our place just up Mongaup rd. It’s a very flat hike with well maintained trails and the opportunity to find ramps and mushrooms if your in the right place at the right time.

Located just minutes up the road this is the closest hike from our house. After you cross the second bridge past the Willowemoc Campground stay to the left onto Flugertown road and trailhead will be on your right about a mile up the road. Further up Flugertown road it will become a seasonal road on public lands that has many well marked snowmobile trails that provides easy hiking. Make sure you download a map as there are multiple trails and there is no cell service.

(25 minute drive) I can’t remember how long this hike is. A little steep but otherwise pretty quick hike to a sheer precipice with amazing views. Use caution with small children or when ice is present. StuNNInG VEIWS!!!

Fly Fishing

The fly fishing in the Catskills is not to be missed. There is access to the Willowemoc creek within walking distance of our front door. The famed Beaverkill is just down the road in the town of Roscoe and for any dry fly purists that want to put your skills to the test book a float on the West Branch or go wade the East BrAnch with a long leader light tippet making perfect casts to small dimples with small flies. Below are some great resource’s.

I rarely buy flies but when I do it’s from Dennis (RIP) and now Joe at Trout town Flies. Joe ties flies in house that picky fish will eat when nothing else will work. Get Joe to guide you for a half day on the Willow if you really want to go down the rabbit hole.

Swimming

There are many a secret swimming holes to be found in any of the rivers nearby. Try and ask some people to tell you where you might find one nearby but if I post it on here I’ll never hear the end of it. Here are some other options.
This is a day use area with a small beach and usually has a lifeguard on duty during the season. Also has a gorgeous hike you can do around the lake. Check NYDEC website for additional information.

This place is the reason people are tight lipped about their swimming holes in the Catskills. In any case it’s a beautiful drive, and still a great spot to check out parking is limited and you need a 10$ permit 7 days a week May-September from Reserve America .

Cycling

If you like wearing padded underwear and climbing a thousand vertical feet for every ten miles than your going to love riding up here. We actually live in one of the ‘flatter?’ areas of the Catskills. As long as you follow the rivers the ascents aren’t too bad but once your try and get from one river drainage to another get ready to stand up and pedal your face off. Below are some screen shots and descriptions of the rides I like. Check out @Sullivancycling on Instagram for weekly rides. Find Jordan M on Strava to see detailed routes.

This is a 20 mile ride door to door. Cut that in half if you turn around at round pond before you descend down to the Neversink. That’s the only major climb on this ride but it’s only about a 1/4 mile. Riding along the Neversink is worth the price you’ll have to pay to get back.
