This trail runs for 12 km over old farm tracks and a newly established river track. The river is intermittently lined with willow trees which provide plenty of shade on a hot summer’s day. It is also a great place to explore and find an uncrowded swimming hole or fishing spot. Mountain bikers, off-road runners, walkers and anglers will enjoy using Twizel River Trail. The pedestrian gates are wide enough for all-terrain baby buggies to fit through so that young families may also enjoy a stroll alongside Twizel River. https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/canterbury/places/twizel-area/things-to-do/twizel-town-tracks/

Skiing

The Ohau Snow field has great terrain for all skill levels from beginners to intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Beginners will find wide open runs while the more advanced rider can hike to more challenging terrain for un-touched powder runs. From the skifield runs, Lake Ōhau and the Mackenzie Basin can be seen spread out below in the valley floor. There are good views across the lake to Ben Ohau.

Much of the upper portion of the river is in the Ahuriri Conservation Park. The River is a well-regarded fly fishing river, containing both brown and rainbow trout. The Ohau canal is a popular fishing spot and it's just over the back fence of the Ruataniwha Hut ! Both rainbow and brown trout are found in the Ohau Canal . These can reach very impressive sizes, particularly early (October) and late (April) in the season.
