The famous Wuxtry Records is still open and one of Athens historic record shops. It is where Michael Stipe and the members of R.E.M. would be found during the explosion of the alternative music scene in the early 80s. It is still open today Downtown Athens.

If you are in town and have a day to spend and enjoy nature. THIS is the one thing you have to do. The Broad River Outpost will take up all of your afternoon, and get some sun and a break from electronics as you drift down the lazy Broad River, until it isn't lazy! There are a few rapids, that make it very exciting. I don't think I have ever heard anyone say they went down the Broad and regretted it, even if it started pouring rain. It is a thirty minute drive north of Athens, and the canoeing varies depending on how fast you go, but typically 2 to 3 hours, then another thirty minutes back to Athens. So, it will be an afternoon for sure, but well worth it! Wear a swimming trunks/suit, with either shoes or Chaco/Teva type sandals..Do not wear flip flops! You won't have them at the end.

If you are going to be in town for a while, you may want to take about an hour and a half drive north to see the mountains of North Georgia, which is the southern stretch of the Appalachian Mountains. One spot in particular is the Tallulah Gorge, the deepest canyon east of the Mississippi River.
