Neighborhoods

In this neighborhood there is something for everyone: for lovers of antiquity, for aspiring scientists, for shoppers and even for the most hardcore sportsmen. Although rich in history, this area, also known as 'West Milan', also due to the many redevelopment projects, is the youngest residential area in Milan.

Sightseeing

After the Duomo it is the most important church in Milan: it is here, in fact, that the relics of Saint Ambrose, bishop and patron saint of Milan, are kept. The basilica was founded in 379 AD, enlarged by the Benedictines in the eighth century and later transformed several times into Romanesque forms. Today it has the classic gabled façade of Lombard Gothic, with two large bell towers built respectively in the eighth and twelfth centuries. The entrance to the church is preceded by a beautiful quadrangle courtyard. Inside, the huge pillars that support the cross vaults stand out. Look for the famous column of the Serpent, a bronze sculpture completed in 1007, towards which the lucky charms of the faithful turn. Also not to be missed is the dome of the Sacello di San Vittore in Ciel d’Oro, a small chapel with mosaics from the 5th century. The body of Saint Ambrose is in the crypt, along with that of other saints.

It is only natural that the city that for a long time hosted the genius of Leonardo and his inventions is now the host of the biggest technology museum in Italy. In fact, an entire gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of Leonardo's models, built on the basis of the original sketches made by the master. Part of the exhibition is housed in an old monastery, so wandering around the exhibition you will also be able to enjoy two magnificent sixteenth-century cloisters. The collection boasts airplanes, locomotives, sailing ships, telescopes, the Enrico Toti submarine, and even an ESA rocket. Useful information: Price: € 10 / 7.50; submarine tour 8 € Metro: Sant’Ambrogio (M2) To board the submarine, take a guided tour that can be booked at the information desk. A submarine simulation has recently been introduced in which you will be able to board and complete a mission! Furthermore, if you are interested in the virtual helicopter flight simulator (20 min), which I think is super fun, you must book at the cash desks.

In 1498, while Leonardo was busy finishing the Last Supper, Ludovico il Moro gave him a bizarre gift: a vineyard. Over the centuries, both the building in front, the Atellani house, and the vineyard, ended up in the Milanese oblivion, until the 1920s, when the Atellani house was restored. In 2015, the vineyard was also restored to its ancient splendor and today the entire complex, one of the wonderful surprises that Milan is able to offer visitors, can be visited every day. Don't miss this Renaissance pearl: book a visit (especially if you intend to see the vineyard on the weekend) and get ready for repeated wonder.

The Maggiore monastery, adjacent to the church of San Maurizio, now houses the Archaeological Museum. There are not many traces of the ancient Mediolanum in the city, but here you can admire many. The museum is accessed from a cloister with fragments of the Roman city walls and from the Torre di Ansperto. Take a trip to this museum if only to see the only piece of Roman walls that have remained intact in Milan. Finally, among the many works on display, do not miss the large head of Zeus: it dates back to the 2nd century AD. and was found near the current Sempione park.

Food & Restaurants

The Spontini pizzerias are another great classic of Milanese restaurants. There are many scattered around the city, but almost all in the center. Via Marghera is a good alternative to the ubiquitous fish restaurants in the area (since the fish market, the largest in Italy, is nearby), with the most popular slices of pizza in the city.

As evidenced by the appearance of an ancient pastry shop of the early twentieth century, here the old Milan lives in the confectionery tradition, which since 1824 has been kept alive by the Marchesi family. Therefore, lovers of biscuits and chocolate, pastries and pastries should come forward: the quality has been impeccable for almost two centuries!

As I told you, there are three restaurants with 2 stars or more in Milan. We have already met two of them (Seta and Enrico Bartolini at Mudec), and this is the third. Although my favorite remains Seta, according to many this is the best restaurant in Milan. It synthesizes the national gastronomic tradition and the reinterpretation in a modern key, with unusual and daring combinations.

The restaurant stands out for its intimate and romantic atmosphere of its garden, in the heart of old Milan, with a very creative cuisine. In winter, the magic of the garden fades, but the quality of the food remains high.
