Arts & Culture

Originally built as a coach house in Victorian times, the building was transformed into one of the smallest theatres in the world in 1984. The Tom Thumb is a striking mix of Japanese and Alpine Architecture, with a quirky, charming interior of velvet seats and flocked wallpaper. You can see a real mix of entertainments. Spoken-word nights, comedy story-telling and burlesque. They screen indie films and promote live bands, solo performers and DJs. Through a programme of residencies, they support and nurture cutting-edge theatre and experimental performance from across the country. They also have a ramshackle cocktail bar upstairs, whiskey sour a particular favourite. On Mondays they host a movie night, always interesting and fun. www.tomthumbtheatre.co.uk

Drinks & Nightlife

So brilliant! A tiny, cavern of a pub in an old fisherman's hut on the harbour arm serving ales, ciders and wine. The walls are papered with old photos and hung with souvenirs. Great selection of board games for when its raining and tables outside with glorious views of the harbour and beach when its not. A real slice of Margate life.

Sightseeing

What a place. What a mystery. What a charming little gift shop. One of Margates strangest landmarks. The story goes that in 1835 Mr James Newlove lowered his young son Joshua into a hole in the ground that had appeared during the digging of a duck pond. Joshua emerged describing tunnels covered with shells. He had discovered the Shell Grotto, its walls decorated with strange symbols mosaiced in millions of shells. www.shellgrotto.co.uk

Entertainment & Activities

A Margate classic since the twenties. Recently rebooted and reopened it is old school funfair with a modern twist, the retro roller disco is a thing of beauty and the old ballroom hosts evening events but its real joy is in unapologetic carnival. The carousel, the hall of mirrors, the big wheel. Booking beforehand saves you a bit too. www.dreamland.co.uk

A little hidden gem of a beach that falls between Margate and Broadstairs with towering chalk stacks. Cafe, pub nearby, deckchair hire and lifeguards. When the tide is out the chalk makes it a great place for fossil hunting and rock pool exploration.

The main tidal pool is situated on the left hand side of the main sands and its nice enough but out of the flat an right (along the costal path) leads you to the other, less well know, tidal pool in Margate. Frequented by locals who know, it isn't supervised like the main sands so swimming is at your own risk but it is beautiful and peaceful. Also great to walk on the wall around it as an addition to your costal walk to be surrounded by water on all sides.
