Sightseeing

The James Irvine trail from Prairie Creek to Gold Bluffs Beach is the perfect day hike. It's a 10 mile round trip, but it's relatively flat and easy 10 miles. The trail transitions from one of the best old growth redwood forests to a more coastal mix with huge spruce trees before ending up in Fern Canyon. There are often elk near the mouth of the canyon near the beach. If you don't want to hike the entire 10 miles there are limited day use permits available to make a long drive to Gold Bluffs Beach where you can then explore Fern Canyon.

There are a number of beaches to explore off of scenic drive and this one is spectacular. It's a short but steep walk down to the beach and it is usually fairly empty. Scenic Drive is in rough shape, but it's fine to drive slow as the views are incredible.

Food Scene

Far and away the best beer around... they always have a number of different beers on tap ranging from IPAs to sours and all very well done. The South G Kitchen is a food truck that is there every day and also has really good food. My favorite fish and chips around.

This place is a local institution... they have great bagels with unique topping options. My go-to is smoked albacore with cream cheese and Larraupin mustard dill sauce. If you like guacamole, the Guac & Lox is piled with a ridiculous amount of it. There is usually a line out the door on weekends, but don't be intimidated, it moves fast...

Nice outdoor seating area to sample good beer and food and often live music during the summer. Only about a five minute drive from the house, it is a great option.

The best fine dining option in Arcata. Definitely geared towards meat, but also has solid seafood options. Craft cocktails and a great wine list too. The service is generally great, which is a big deal around here If you spend time in a real city you will probably notice that service around Humboldt is generally inattentive and slow, but this restaurant proves that you can find great service in Arcata...

Really good wine with grapes sourced from the best wine regions of California. The owners are great and very knowledgeable and it is a great stop before or after checking out the beaches around Trinidad.

Wonderful food focused on items cooked in their giant brick oven. I love the wild mushroom cobbler and fettina steak, but everything they have is great. They have a constantly changing wine list that features a wide variety and service is usually really good.
