My favorite park--in my hometown. Once you see it, you'll understand. A Hawaiian fishpond has been reclaimed by locals--buy their produce at the local farmers market. Kayaking tours leave from here.

Neighborhoods

This is where you are staying, at the world famous Makaha beach. There are people there on all surf conditions---which shows how versatile the island waterman lifestyle is--swimming, spear fishing, snorkeling, diving, paddling, surfing, boogie boarding, boating, jet skiing, kayaking, hoverboarding, sunbathing, picnicking, etc. There is a little strip mall where you can get a great shave ice, or do some light shopping at the Longs Drugs or the small market. Driving into the valley, there is a golf course and you can often see peacocks strolling through the neighborhood.

Trendy urban millennial hipster neighborhood with a mix of industrial low rent shops and multimillion dollar flats. The annual Pow! street art brings new murals to the walls for a fun walk through the neighborhood and many of the microbreweries are located here. A few trendy restaurants such as Scratch, and shops like Eden in Love make it a pleasant place to venture into Honolulu for a day. At the waterfront, there is a people's park that is hippie cool with surfers just off the sea wall.

Waikiki is given a bad name, but it is really a must see for a first time visitor. It has a beach the length of the neighborhood, anchored at one end by Ala Moana Beach Park and shopping center where there private and commercial harbor for boating and diving is located--and the other end has the zoo and aquarium. Many large and small hotels in between and dining options as well for all budgets. Waikiki is a historic district rich with history--and I recommend taking a walking tour with the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association if they are offering one while you are visiting.

This is a local bedroom community with a large population of Native Hawaiians due to the many farms that started at Kaneohe and continue today in the Waimanalo valley and the Kahaluu and Waihole and Waikane valleys leading towards the North Shore. Waihole Poi Factory is a great stop for fresh poi and Hawaiian food. The Valley of the Temples, the Ho'omaluhia Botannical Gardens, the Heeia State Park and Pier, just to name a few attractions.
