Food Scene

By far, my most visited food truck in Portland, Kim Jong Grillin does Korean BBQ right. Get the Bibim Box with any of their BBQ meat options. Extremely generous portions for a fair price.

Probably the most ornately decorated themed cart I know of, the food and staff are incredible. The food is Paleo and Gluten-free. Everything has tons of flavor and is well-seasoned. Perfect for a hearty, healthy meal for a good price. Try the paleo rolls and chicken skewers.

If you are gluten-intolerant, New Cascadia is a must-visit in Portland! This place blew my mind the first time I tried their delicious bread. I don't know their secret but they are miles ahead of any other gluten-free bakery I have tried. They also offer great pastries, muffins, and coffee.

I love Fern's concept. They are a healthy cafe offering juices, smoothies, breakfast, lunch, and desserts. They use local, organic, ethical ingredients. Try their eggs benedict or steelhead hash. It doesn't get too crazy for weekend brunch, although it is adjacent to a posh yoga studio, so when class gets out, you may find yourself in line behind a flood of hungry spandex-clad women.

Great, affordable breakfast spot! Love their gluten-free toast option and potatoes and squash side. Come during the week or get there early on weekends to avoid the wait. The decor is somewhere between Parisian cafe and Granny's parlor. You will also find plenty of Grannies patronizing this spot. Definitely not the exposed brick and reclaimed wood look of many popular Portland hipster brunch spots, but for my money (and because I hate to wait in line for food) this place hits the spot.

Holy crap this place is good. A little out of the way for me, but man is it worth the trip. Owned by a young couple from Jamaica, there are only a few items on their menu and they run out if you don't get there in time. But, hey, that means they make things fresh every day, and that's okay by me. So far I have tried the jerk chicken and curry goat. Perfectly spicy and satisfying!

Oh, how I love Cloud City! Best ice cream in Portland, in my opinion. If you don't want to wait in line at Salt and Straw (and there WILL be a line), Cloud City is where it's at. Try the Earl Grey Blueberry.

Drinks & Nightlife

I mostly go to bars to play pinball. That said, slingshot is a neighborhood dive hangout for locals with a pretty good beer and cider selection and solid burgers. And great pinball.

If you are not into pinball, skip it. Bartenders are nice, food is bad, the clientele are loud and drunk. The type of crowd that would all erupt in synchronized song if Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" came on the jukebox. But amazing selection of pinball games and they are kept in good shape!

I remember the day I wandered off Division St into Scoreboard. Suspended from the doorway entrance was a strange baggie filled with what I assumed was water. Maybe some kind of crude booby trap security tactic? The bar is dark and cave-like. And quiet. There were some old-timers nursing drinks at the bar and some plugging away at video poker machines. Then I turned to the right. This place is huge. There is an entire room half the size of the bar with around 10 pinball machines! All in good working order. Nobody in the place playing them. I love scoreboard.

Powell's on Hawthorne is a mini version of Powell's downtown. I love how the stacks are curated by the very well-read staff. Their recommendations are usually spot on. There is a great coffee shop adjacent that is open late. Great place to work or read.
