Founded in 1756 by government initiative of the Marquis of Pombal, as the first demarcated region and regulated in the world, the Alto Douro Wine Region, is an exceptional example of a traditional region that lives around wine production, is the famous Port wine, is the latest high-quality table wines. All these wines come from the terraces surrounding the Douro river and its tributaries, where schist walls support wings of vines loaded with white grape clusters or ink.
Not only the landscape is altered by the production of wine, but also the rhythm of life of the Douro. If the winter is marked by the calm and the quiet, which becomes apparent in the bare vines, the transition from summer to autumn brings the bustle of harvest, with a down and up baskets and pruning shears, the slopes populated by workers.
Recognizing the importance of the landscape and traditional activities wine production in 2001 UNESCO classified as World Heritage 24 600 hectares of the Alto Douro Wine Region, spread over 13 municipalities
