I staged a show about our nurses in WWII who served on the hospital ships in the galleries of this Museum and in the process discovered how fabulous and interesting this museum is. I'm not naturally drawn to ships and boats and things about the sea, but I love this place. It tells much of the history of our people (Māori, Pasifika, European) who settled in New Zealand and who of course came here by sea. Out front is a replica of Black Magic, our Americas Cup winning boat, and inside a gallery dedicated to our top sailing competitors. The Museum is situated in converted water sheds on our downtown harbour, effectively on the doorstep of our city, surrounded by bars and restaurants, and next to the dock which takes you to Waiheke Island.

Local Vegetarian and Vegan

These are all local vegan and vegetarian all of which attract people from across Auckland. Most are within a 15 min walk, a couple will take 30 mins to get to by foot (or a 10 min uber ride).
Big Sur is a 7 min walk away, has a sunny, private courtyard out back and serves all day breakfast and lunch. I recommend their kawakawa and ginger tea, and the Vietnamese pancake. (Kawakawa is a NZ native tree, used by Māori as a poultice for healing skin. It has excellent antiseptic qualities, but I like it because it tastes sweet and slightly peppery).
