People make pilgrimages to this place and it almost always has a line out the door on the weekends. Their breakfast sandwiches are off the hook. Their pastries and other sandwiches are amazing as well. FYI closed on Tuesdays.

Hip foodies come from around the Bay Area to eat here. It’s famous for its weekend brunch, but lunch and dinner any day is delightful. They make their own beautiful bread and butter and their offerings are always seasonally inspired. We love this place.

The Pizza Place is just what it sounds like: a simple, but solid pizza joint. Josh loves the Demetre (a meaty pie with mushrooms). They have local beers on tap and tvs showing sports at all hours.

Worth the 15 minute walk north, Andytown Coffee roasts their own beans, and painstakingly pulls each espresso with an artisan’s touch. Must try: Snowy Plover. Don’t ask. Just trust. Also worth trying: homemade scones with a slice of real Irish cheddar cheese served on a wooden plank.

Great Highway at Fulton. On a beautiful, sunny weekend day, the Beach Chalet is crawling with people, and for good reason. They serve local brews and bites and they’re RIGHT off of ocean beach. “A stone fireplace heats up cold foggy nights, while retractable glass walls that face the Dutch windmill and trees in Golden Gate Park open when the weather is nice.”- SF Gate

Parks & Nature

The glory of Ocean Beach is a mere four blocks west, and they call this neighborhood the Sunset for good reason. It’s a wonderful place to be any time of day, but much of the neighborhood spills out onto the beach for the last moments of daylight. It’s truly a sight to behold. To the south, you can walk all the way to Fort Funston, a dog walker’s paradise. To the North, walk past Golden Gate Park and all the way to Cliff House, Sutro Baths and the the trails of Lands End. Experienced surfers know Ocean Beach for its challenging waves. The rest of us just like to spectate!

San Francisco’s most famous park is only nine blocks north. You can get there via beach or street. We suggest renting a bike (see below), but the walk is nice too. Once in the park, take your pick of world renowned museums (de Young, Academy of Sciences, Conservatory of Flowers) or experience San Francisco’s Botanical Garden, Japanese Tea Garden or Shakespeare Garden and amphitheater. Take a toss or two on the Golden Gate Park disk golf course, check out a pack of urban buffalos, or stumble upon impetuous swing dancing or throwback rollerskate parties. On a nice day, consider packing a picnic and find one of GGP’s many meadows to lay down a blanket and crack a bottle of wine. Biking around the park is easy, especially on Sundays when they shut down a number of park roads to cars. It’s a pedestrian paradise! There are also some cool events at GGP in the evening. The botanical gardens host interesting star-gazing events. Check their website for details.

Sightseeing

Just south of us is Lake Merced, another excellent park that surrounds a freshwater lake. Cyclists, joggers, fisherpeople, birdwatchers and boaters dig this place. Right next door to Lake Merced is the San Francisco Zoo. The zoo has lots of interesting animals and they have daily educational activities and talks. Check out the lemurs! They are fantastically entertaining.

In our opinion, the Sunset is the best part of SF to explore by bike because it’s relatively flat! Our favorite place to rent bikes is Swell, a sweet little bike shop on Irving street. It’s $25 per day to rent.
