Food Scene

A take away and delicatessen offering creative vegetarian and vegan fare, made in-house from scratch using mainly regionally sourced vegetables and fruit. The shop carries a wide range of condiments, pickles, preserves and additions for the vegetarian home cook, all equally made fresh and from unprocessed ingredients. It's also possible to eat there and there's a terrace in the back which catches the afternoon sun. Run by a charming Dutch/English couple and an Austrian with a background in fine dining. They feel it’s high time that top quality, nutritious and exciting vegetarian food started to become available to the wider public.

My favourite place for lunch in Haarlem. Wonderful food and cafe atmosphere, friendly staff. By LIMA proves that a healthy lifestyle isn’t boring. This ‘good food cafe’ is open for breakfast and lunch and has many healthy options to go or to stay. For each item on the menu it’s marked if it’s vegetarian, vegan or gluten free. Besides all their home made options, they also sell healthy cakes and sweets from Sharp Sharp. The treats from Sharp Sharp are sugar free, gluten free and vegan.

Klein Parijs (sorry, this tool translated the name into English above!) is my favourite cafe in Haarlem with plenty of charm and atmosphere. French music, French sandwiches, croissants and pain au chocolat, French decor. Tout simplement fantastique!

Lovely cafe with soups and sandwiches in the park behind the station with a great terrace. Nice place to sit on a sunny day. 'Dohuys' doesn't mean 'doll house' though one could be excused for thinking so. It means the 'crazy house'. This building housed lepers back in olden days, being outside the old city walls just over the canal behind the station.

Hippy cum squat style bar and pizzeria on a river beach near the train tracks in the middle of Haarlem. Very poplular in the summer to take a dip in the river and relax with a cold beer. Fantastic oval pizzas for 10 euros (big enough to share between 2), laid back, friendly and the sun always shines there! Live bands in the evening, full moon parties. Not age-ist, everyone's welcome!

On the top floor of the new Hudson's Bay department store opposite MacDonald's. It has a terrace and is the best place to go for a view over the roof tops and church spires of Haarlem.

Wonderful new cafe / restaurant in a sort of greenhouse (glass walls and ceiling) on the top floor of a parking garage. There's also a big terrace for sunning yourself. Excellent view over Haarlem. It serves fresh local seasonal dishes. If you go outside of lunch and after work hours, it's a great place for some peace and quiet.

The 'Anne Frank' house of Haarlem. Far less touristy that the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and just as interesting. Guided tours in English and Dutch every day except for Sunday. And it's free!

Parks & Nature

This is a great place to walk around. There are beautiful paths winding through the trees, bushes and flowers (with the ruins of a castle to explore), and a nature playground for children. There are also green houses where locals can go to pick their own organically grown vegetables for a yearly fee. And there's a cafe that serves soups and sandwiches.
