The views from Cais de Gaia are perhaps the longest-lasting images of Oporto for visitors. It's impossible not to stand in awe at the city's stunning skyline, whose impact is further enhanced by the picturesque boats that stand in front, and the soaring double-decker Dom Luis Bridge. Breathe in the atmosphere from the several cafes and restaurants at the riverfront (Bogani Café is especially recommended for a drink and chill-out sounds), and then visit the terracotta-topped Port Wine warehouses that stand behind them. Most of the world's supply of Port is stored and aged here, and a visit to any of the warehouses should not be missed. If you venture into the alleys uphill, you will find 19th century manor houses and even more port lodges (that of Taylor's is especially worth a visit). It is best to come here in late afternoon and stay for dinner overlooking Oporto.

The Dom Luís I (or Luiz I) Bridge (Portuguese: Ponte Luís I or Luiz I) is a double-decked metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At the time of construction its span of 172 m was the longest of its type in the world. The government held a competition for the construction of a metallic bridge over the Douro River on a site that was adjacent to an existing bridge that it would replace. Téophile Seyrig had engineered the D. Maria Pia Bridge project nearby, whilst working as a partner of Gustave Eiffel. He now took sole responsibility for the new, major Luís I Bridge. The construction was begun in 1881 and the bridge opened on 31 October 1886 (the upper deck; the lower deck opened in 1887).[2] Total length 385.25 m Weight 3045 tons The arch measures 172 m in length and 44.6 m in height https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dom_Lu%C3%ADs_I_Bridge

Part of the area classified by UNESCO as World Heritage in December 1996, the Monastery of Serra do Pilar is the architectural landmark of Gaia. The interesting church and cloisters are laid out according to a circular design unique in Portugal. The convent built in the 16th century belonged to the Order of Saint Augustine. The church is characterised by a circular shape, a replica of the Church of Santa Maria Redonda in Rome, and is covered by a hemispheric vault with a narrow balcony running its full extent. It took 72 year to complete due to the lack of funding and the political turmoil of those times – with the kingdom of Portugal having fallen to neighbouring Spain. One legacy of that event was the adoption of a Spanish saint for the monastery, Our Lady of Pilar. In 1832, during the Siege of Oporto, its military value was made use of with the convent swiftly turned into an improvised fort. At the beginning of the 20th century, the monastery was used for military barracks and remains under the tutelage of the Serra do Pilar Artillery Regiment. Within, the Church features some impressive carved gold leaf altars with Solomonic columns. There are also 18th century, polychrome wooden carvings of the saints Eulalia, Apollonia and Augustine. In front of the church, there is a wonderful view point taking in the full splendour of the city of Oporto and the river Douro below. Wonderfully located golf course, right on top of the beach, with breathtaking views of the ocean waves. The existence of Miramar Golf Club is due to the initiative of Frank Gordon and the Portuguese Cláudio e Mário Martins. In 1931, they decided to create a golf club more open to the Portuguese, who in this way could have easier access to golf. Its first General Meeting was held in 1934. The course was designed by Frank Gordon and Artur Mariani Jr. It is a par 70 - 35 for each of the two nine-hole rounds and it has some holes that deserve a special reference. For example, the green of the 7th hole and hole number 9, a par 4 of exceptional class for its length, the difficulty of the out-of-bounds to the right, as well as a fast green defended by a bunker in front and another one behind. These are excellent holes, that any good player would appreciate playing. http://www.cgm.pt https://www.facebook.com/clubdegolfdemiramar/timeline

Drinks & Nightlife

Wonderful and fancy roof-top bar, from one of the best known Porto Wine Cellars - Porto Cruz. Probably one of the best places to have a Porto Wine (or Tonic Porto!) with breathtaking views of the river, Ribeira do Porto (World Heritage) and the D. Luís bridge.
