There are terrific hikes to do on Nevis: Heritage Trail – a long stroll which takes you around the island, The Source – a moderate hike up one of the hills to the water sources, The Mountain – a strenuous climb to the top of Mount Nevis, The Waterfalls – a moderate to heavy hike to a series of waterfalls and Saddle Hill, an easy climb to a ruined fort.
Being volcanic means height, wet and good soil. Nevis is largely covered by rainforest with some grasslands on the windward side. There are various walks through dense rain forest and guides who know about the flora and fauna can be booked.

The buildings of Nevis date back to the 17th century. Charlestown is a an unspoiled stone and wood town with architectural treasures and that have been restored and some still waiting for restoration. Dotted around the island are small and exquisite stone churches and the remains of forts and plantations. Places associated with both Horatio Nelson and Alexander Hamilton are still here as an old Jewish cemetery. Knowledgeable tour guides can be booked in The Hermitage office. Tours usually last between two to four hours.

Museum of Nevis History

With just a phone call, a rental can be brought directly to the Hermitage. Prices begin around US$45 per day. All you need is a valid driver's license and US$25 for each local driver license.
We drive on the left side of the road and the maximum speed limit is 40 miles per hour. There are no stoplights and just a few street signs. We share the road with chickens, goats and donkey. There are a few monkey crossing signs.
On an island that is only 36 square miles round, it only takes one hour to drive all the way around. This is a great island to explore, most of the roads are in pretty good shape, a little bumpy in some places and in some place actually non-existent.
