Food Scene

Settled in the sleepy village of Tillington, near Petworth, West Sussex, The Horse Guards Inn is a 350 year old pub in The South Downs National Park. With rolling views down the Rother Valley, the Horse Guards got its name in the 1840's, when part the household cavalry would frequent the Inn, while their horses rested on grass in the grounds of the Petworth Estate under the watchful eye of Lord Egremont. The pub is relaxed, friendly and informal with wooden tables and chairs, oak beams and stripped floorboards. In winter you can roast chestnuts foraged from Petworth Park on one of the open log fires, play board games at the bar and forget about outside with a warm glass of spiced cider.

If you visit here during open season April to October - then you should visit the beautiful gardens at the castle. They do charge to get in, so please check before you go. But - in my view, well worth the money.

Halnaker windmill is walked to via the most picturesque of walks through the tree tunnel. To find where it is. North of Chichester, You need to head to warehead farm, on Mill Lane. Please google it. Once you've parked (just off the road), to the North is a public footpath in Halnaker (pronounced Ha’naker), a hamlet a few miles north of Chichester in West Sussex, in the South Downs National Park. The lane follows an ancient track along the route of Stane Street, the London to Chichester Roman road. Over the years many have walked along this route forming a hollow way, where the path has sunk down, worn away by centuries of footfall. When you reach the windmill you are rewarded with fabulous views of Chichester and the South Downs.
